A severe blizzard disrupted Alliance with two train wrecks near Sidney and Herndon, killing four and injuring twenty two. Widespread damage across five states followed, with stock losses and property destruction. Photos of stranded passengers and stockman scenes are featured.
A selection of reader and trade opinions lauds the Alliance Herald for its March 6 Industrial Edition. Critics from Crawford Courier, Bayard Transcript, Maryland Tribune, Thomas County Herald, and others praise its size, wealth of data, and upbuilding impact on western Nebraska.
Train No. 41 from Seneca, with about eighty passengers, was stuck for 56 hours in a snow drift two and a half miles east of Ellsworth. Crews used water from ranchers, melted snow for diner water, and relief trains with rotary plows and push engines battled drifts to reach Alliance. A large crew including soldiers and Dr. Packard aided passengers. after rescue, passengers praised treatment.
Lloyd C Thomas sworn as president of The Herald Publishing Company asserts that during the first eleven weeks of 1918 the Alliance Herald circulated 14 480 copies in regular issues through the mails, carriers, newsstands, and the Herald office, averaging 1 480 per issue. Notary Jor ll Westover attested on March 20, 1913 with commission expiry 1917.
Spedden Paige Co. Intercet ip the performances by the Spedden Paige Stock Company continues. The twelve member cast, all women and men, delivers a strong repertoire backed by clean moral vaudeville between acts. The company closes Saturday with a matinee and night show, while Friday features DuBarry by Mrs. Leslie Carter with elaborate costumes and scenery. Tickets are affordable and expected to sell out. Mrs. Chas Trinkle’s daughter is seriously ill with pneumonia.
