Boys Earn Certificates and Free Trip for Potato Club Project

Eleven Box Butte County boys completed 1916 potato growing work under county and extension supervision. They earned certificates of achievement, profits at 14.2 cents per bushel, and a free trip to the Boys Potato Congress in Alliance. Landlord received rent, 12 percent return on investment, and some won county fair medals. The 1917 club expects more participation with cards available through teachers and the county agent.

Bill Favored by Companies Is Killed

Insurance agents and representatives from many companies filled Lincoln this week at the capitol building. The anti discrimination bill backed by the firms was killed yesterday afternoon by the insurance committee with an eight to one vote against it. John W. Guthrie of Alliance Insurance stopped in Lincoln after attending an Equitable Life meeting in Omaha.

C M Downs sold his interest in the Alliance News to K M Hendee, his former partner. Hendee arrived from Lincoln months ago to run the paper. Downs moved to Lincoln and seeks an appointment as deputy pure food commissioner. his family remains in Lincoln.

Box Butte Potato Club Winners Lead County And State

Kenneth Gilmore of Alliance won first place in Box Butte County and ranked fourth in the state potato contest. Despite drought and inexperience, county growers improved yields and efficiency. James Chaulk of Chadron led the state with 264 bushels at 10.5 cents per bushel, followed by a Kimball County boy and a tie between Sheridan and Washington counties. Box Butte and Gilmore finished fourth in the state standings.

Alliance A. A. A. A. Basketball Defeated 42 36 in Sidney

The Sidney Athletic Club beat the four A’s from Alliance 42 to 36 in a rough midweek game at Sidney. Alliance led early but Sidney surged after halftime with a fresh lineup, overcoming injuries to Darnell and Black. Notable scorers included Daniela and Davis for Sidney and Gleason for Alliance.

Judge Westover Grants Three Absolute Divorces

Judge Westover adjourned a special district court session this morning. Equity and probate cases were heard, and three divorces were granted: Mary Rust from Walter L Rust, Mable G Newcomb from Claude W Newcomb, and Amy P Kaiser from Henry Kaiser restoring her maiden name. Thirty days for indecent exposure arrest

Robert Smith, a white gentleman and cook, was arrested Tuesday on a complaint charging indecent exposure. This second offense led Police Magistrate Roberts to sentence him to thirty days in work for the city, with lodging at Hotel La City Jail. Smith has worked on the streets since Tuesday aiding the street department to dig trenches for water runoff.

Former Alliance Dentist Becomes Canadian Captain

J. M. Kennedy, once a dentist in Alliance, has been promoted to captain in a Canadian regiment. His brother Amos Kennedy, serving at the front, sent the news by letter, noting the promotion after Kennedy moved to Canada about two years ago at the outbreak of the European war.
