Funds distributed to county districts in 1917 apportionment

Opald Russell reports the first semiannual school fund apportionment of 1917 totaling $2,280.51 to county districts. Fines revenue adds $2,134.84 from state sources and $154.67 from county. One quarter of funds go equally to all districts. three quarters are divided by average daily attendance across 48 eligible districts. Districts 42, 80, 17, and 67 receive nothing. Details list district by district attendance, amounts, officials, months, and valuations, plus the Alliance city schools with 1,423 pupils and 45 mill tax.

Alliance Defeats Mitchell In Season Opener 35 to 17

A large turnout witnessed Alliance defeat Mitchell 35 to 17 at the high school gym. Alliance led with eight baskets first half and ten second, while Mitchell had four and six respectively. Notable players included Darnell and Coryell for Alliance and Adney and Riley for Mitchell. Crawford refereed.

Death of Bernice Armstrong in Alliance Inquest

Miss Bernice Armstrong died at 6 a m in the Barber home 705 Larami e avenue cause Brights disease and heart trouble The 22 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs L Armstrong had come to Alliance to visit her sister Miss Gladys Armstrong and seek medical treatment The parents arrived Tuesday and the funeral is set for tomorrow February 2 with services at the Harbor home

Auto Delivery Wagon Plunges Over Wall at Drake Hotel

Richard Young driving for Alliance Creamery backed into a doorway opening into a brick wall at the Drake hotel. The auto skidded over the south wall into the runway ten feet below, pinning him but leaving him with only minor bruises. The car was freed with a block and tackle and suffered little damage.

Dry Bill Nears House Action in Nebraska Legislature

Nebraska's dry law moves toward introduction as a special committee combines features from four bills. The group, led by Beal Chappell Sandall Norton Flansburg and Thomas, aims for a drastic but feasible measure with tight import limits red tape a prohibition of advertising prohibition of clubs and stronger anti bootlegging controls. The double election board bill awaits Senate action with county level procedures and a plan to finish counting by midnight.

Woman County Agent to Serve Three Nebraska Counties

The county board approves funds to hire a woman county agent to work with women in Box Butte Sheridan and Dawes counties. Miss Mary Rohkar, with Alliance as HQ, is likely to be assigned. The effort follows the Smith Lever Act for cooperative extension in agriculture and home economics.

Local capital backs an Alliance hotel project to cost about 85000 to 100000 dollars with 12000 subscribed at a banquet led by J M Miller. A committee will raise the remaining funds, aiming to complete financing within days as city hotels reach capacity nightly.

Aged rancher F. M. Thompson buried at Presbyterian church

Funeral for F. M. Thompson held Monday at the Presbyterian church with Rev. Lewis McIntyre presiding. Thompson died Saturday at his daughter’s ranch home about thirty miles south of Alliance at age eighty six, leaving four sons and two daughters and several siblings and a brother in Texas. He was born May 13, 1830 in Belmont county and lived in multiple states before settling in this county.

Club Plans to Sell Mailing Lists of Names

The Commercial Club plans to prepare mailing lists to sell to members for a set price. The lists would include names of taxpayers ranchmen farmers railroad men voters married men single men and others.

Stockmen Reunion Flatters Alliance with Big June Show

Alliance plans a joint Stockmen's Reunion and Box Butte Fair event probably June 27 to 29 blending races bucking horse contests wild west exhibitions and a carnival with dances and side attractions. Organizers expect a historic turnout funded by the Alliance Commercial Club and fair association with shared receipts and expenses.
