Melvin Barney is found dead by the barn near Marsland under heart trouble likely lasting years. The funeral is planned for Friday afternoon with relatives traveling, as snow blankets the area and severe cold persists.
Three dollars sent by J. O. Boon of Saskatchewan Canada arrived by mail with a request to credit votes in the Universal Chair to his friend H. A. Carpenter. Had the remittance arrived before the contest close Carpenter’s vote would have been larger than reported.
An editor notes delivered wrong papers and scarce wrappers in yesterday's issue. Extra copies will be supplied to carriers and offices. those who received the wrong papers may request the current issue twice daily to rectify the shortage.
C. C. Dye of Windham Montana left a suitcase with a traveler in Alliance station on Tuesday. A depot officer observed a Black man lift the bag and start away then return it after intervention. The man was arrested and jailed, claiming no knowledge of the case.
The Baptlet community gathered at the church then hosted Rev and Mrs Karrett with a social evening. A messenger invited the couple to the parsonage and friends delivered a generous pile of gifts including items for a Christmas dinner.
Mrs F A Dunning and her four month old son Mac arrived with Mr Dunning for a family visit in Alliance. Mac is claimed by Grandmother McCorkle as the only Nebraska baby with a birthday every month, marking his fourth month today. Mrs Dunning plans a lengthy stay, possibly weeks or months, while Mr Dunning may join for a few days if possible.
A Sunday service at Fairview Church will be held on December 28 at 3 p m The sermon will be centered on themes fitting the last Sunday of the year.
The Herald extends a Christmas greeting urging peace and universal good will. It cites the angels' message of peace on earth and the brotherhood of man, expressing a wish that joy and love fill all hearts and direct lives during the season.
A. W. Taylor of Antioch reports his recent sale drew about 4400 dollars excluding land. He plans to move back to Iowa with the family, possibly returning later, and will have The Herald address changed to Pleasantville, Iowa.
Joseph M Namara proprietor of the Alliance Shoe Store died in El Paso Texas on Tuesday morning. His wife and children were with him. The body was sent to Wisner Nebraska for interment. He was a brother of Father Me Namara a Catholic priest known across western Nebraska. He had long suffered from tuberculosis and was well liked locally.
The Daily Herald announces an eight page edition today with Christmas matter for readers. Tomorrow no paper will be issued due to Christmas. exchanges receive four pages and some subscribers get four pages. Regular publication resumes Friday with holiday news.
Mrs. Danny Lyons left this noon for Chadron to visit her father and mother Mr and Mrs Wall. She will be gone over Christmas.
The Herald notes a surge in sending Christmas post cards with at least 2,500 mailed today, the highest daily total at the post office. The piece defends cards as tokens of friendship, arguing low cost and quick delivery outweigh the habit of giving costly gifts.
A group of Hyannis men were in Alfance Tuesday for Christmas shopping. Attendees included Wm. Thurston ex sheriff Dr. Anderson Mr. O'Neill Mr. Beam and Mr. Coodemough.
Geo W Howe of Merriman Nebraska, a temperance advocate, was convicted December 15 of unwittingly delivering liquor to Pine Ridge Reservation members. President Wilson pardoned jail time, leaving a $60 fine and about $300 in costs.
Mrs. H. B. Carpenter hosted a surprise party for Mr. Carpenter. A turkey supper followed the festivities. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Powell and Rev. and Mrs. Barrett.
Fe. F. Barley and family of Belmond Iowa visit Co A Dow and family. Mr. Barley is the brother of Mrs. Dow. They plan to stay about a week before returning ena.
