Modern Woodmen announces a special meeting at Eagle hall Friday evening August 14 to initiate a class. State Deputy Kister and Assistant Deputies Burgess and Woodly will attend to exemplify the work. Refreshments to follow. E M Martin Consul.
Mary E. Ryan, born Kilkaire Ireland May 1878, died after a long illness with dropsy at her uncle John Hagerty’s home. She came to America at age seven and lived in Omaha most of her life, recently staying with relatives for health. Surrounded by kin at her death, she leaves a mother and two brothers in Omaha. remains sent there Tuesday with M. H. and Miss Norine Hagerty.
The veteran railroad contractor Mr. Elmore reports in a letter that his Cumberland Maryland project nears completion and he has secured the head contract for fourteen miles on the Wabash near Hagerstown. He will establish headquarters in a Toomthorse and is moving steam shovel plants to the site.
The writer notes ongoing duties near Cumberland with Dan Foley and brother John helping. Weather is cool for the east, but the mountains provide some fortune and shelter as work continues.
J D Patterson of Lakeside visited town Saturday after returning from Red Oak Town where he attended the illness of his brother in law J K Dennis a Lakeside resident and partner of Mr Pattison Dennis suffered from liver disease and died Wednesday at his mother's home He was well known and highly esteemed locally
T. S. Fielding recovered his horse after a notice about a horse taken up by Miss Stratton at Berea appeared in The Herald. A jewelry loss in Alliance also returned after advertising in the paper. The involved parties credit advertising for quick results.
BH. F. Lockwood & Co. have leased from W. D. Rumer the store building now occupied by him and will move their stock of furniture there as soon as Mr. Rumer moves to his new building. This will create commodious quarters for the Lockwoods.
C. W. Keeler, while rounding up cattle at his ranch twenty five miles northeast of Alliance last Thursday, was thrown from his horse and injured landing on his head and shoulder. He lay unconscious for a time before being brought to town yesterday and placed at the home of his son James. Doctors consider his injuries not serious.
Races postponed from last Saturday due to rain will be held next Saturday afternoon at the track. A crowd is expected and some events may be moved to accommodate conditions.
H L Bushnell sold the Palace meat market to J L Heater and L Preuss who will run the business in the same building. Heater has dealt in stocks south of Alliance and Preuss has long worked in Alliance meat markets. Both are well known and expected to attract customers as Bushnell retires to devote attention to other interests.
Mr and Mrs BE Mabin visited from Nonpareil precinct on Monday to conduct business and visit friends. Uncle Zeke reports a vast yield of grain in the area with more corn than can be shocked. Jude Judgell recalls seeing corn stalks towering over treetops while visiting his old Missouri home.
J. L. Gibbs schedules high diving exhibitions at the race course next Saturday at 1 PM and Sunday at 1 PM after postponements due to heavy rains. Mrs. Gibbs will join the shows with free admission to both performances.
James Wyman sustained a large leg fracture just above the ankle when a horse fell on him last Saturday. He is nephew and employee of A. S. Reed and is being cared for at Reed's home.
