Omaha market notes large receipts and record heat dragging down prices. Grass fat steers 21c to 50c lower, butchers stock 50c to $1 lower, stockers and feeders $0.75 to $1.50 lower. forecasts hotter and drier weather with potential further declines.
Box Butte county registration board directs all 1917 class one registrants to report for physical examination today at 1 pm, including several named men. The notice lists additional 1918 registrants, their classifications, and exemptions, and notes a Junior Red Cross institute meeting for district No 10 at Chadron on August 12.
Prices show fat Nebraska cows and heifers at 8.00 to 9.50 per cwt, with other grades listed. Hog prices top at 19.40 with recent gains fading to 18.00–19.00 for mixed and packing hogs, while sheep and lambs rise 25–60 cents amid lighter supplies. Bowles Commission urges readers to report missed issues for timely market data.
American troops cross the Vesle in a fierce advance amid shelling as French forces shift positions on the left. German counterattacks fail. Major General Graves is named to command an American Siberian expedition, with 2 regiments from the Philippines part of a larger plan to deploy 5,000,000 men in future years.
The Mother church of Christ in Boston organized a comforts forwarding committee in 1917 to distribute knitted goods and garments to war service men and refugees. Branches across the United States prepare dresses, trousers, socks, and wool vests from new and used cloth, sending thoroughly cleaned secondhand clothes overseas. Alliance ladies run a local comforts warding committee meeting twice weekly, producing items like children’s dresses and reworking men’s shirts for boys.
Dr G E Condra director of the Nebraska Conservation and Soil Survey, visiting near Alliance, urges farmers in Box Butte and surrounding areas to plant much larger fall wheat acreage. He notes local yields up to forty bushels per acre and calls for using all available tractors to break virgin prairie for better crops on idle fertile soil.
Christopher R. Polson son of Mia and Charles Calmers near Alliance are reported seriously wounded in France. Polson enlisted in the east and was visited by his mother in New York City before departing. Also announced is the marriage of Miss Georgia Lydia Canfield to Mr Leo Leslie Lozier on August 8 1918 in Belleville Kansas with residence in Cedar Rapids Iowa after August 15.
A. G. Isaacson, proprietor of The Fashion Shop, returned Saturday afternoon from a three week eastern buying trip visiting New York and Chicago. He purchased a fine line of fall goods to be placed on sale soon and advised shoppers not to fear high prices as styles are better than ever and prices are reasonable.
Engineers Crossette and Kimball erect a compact potash plant on Phelan ranch lakes eight miles southeast of Alliance. The system uses a brick tower and baffle plates to spray brine, with a blower aiding draft to reduce coal needed. Experts estimate five tons per day at low cost with strong profit potential.
The casualty list for Nebraska includes Private Ernest K.R. August of Dorchester killed in action Corporal Arthur H. Pierson of Salem died of disease Privates Harry R. Branscom of Upton Wyoming and Nels Foss of Omaha wounded. The Tuesday list shows Sergeant Albert J. Grabowski of Beatrice died of wounds Cook John Wayne Webb of Wineton and Private Frank Young of Liberty died of wounds Lieutenant Edgar C.C. Weastervelt of Lincoln severely wounded Privates Richard Ellis of Crete Harry Irwin of Craig Corporal Chester A. Sawyer of Bassett wounded and A. A. Van Lein of Omaha preparing for army balloon training.
