Chester Snow Dies in Alliance After Long Alaska Life

Chester K. Snow prominent Alaskan citizen died at 11:45 p.m. Monday in Alliance after a 13 week battle with nephritis. Born December 24, 1874 in Shanango county New York, he founded Ruby Alaska and served in the Alaska legislature. He was known for aid to Indians, river rescues, and selfless public service. His funeral was held Wednesday at the Episcopal church in Alliance.

In Alliance a broken trunk in Burlington depot baggage room released strong fumes of whisky attracting baggagemen and officers. Drayman and J. Q. Eberhardt confronted officers in Wilson block room nine as quart and pint casks were seized and placed in County Judge Tash’s courthouse vault.

Alliance Club objects to Times slam in Tuesday issue

The Alliance Community Club board denounces a Tuesday Alliance Times feature they call an unmerited insult to the entire board. The piece questions censorship of Times opinions and mocks a club member, using sharp metaphors about censorship and a copperhead viper analogy.

Red Cross Appeals for August Quota Across Allianc

The Alliance Red Cross seeks more volunteers to fill an August quota of knitted items including 720 socks 69 sweaters 28 helmets 52 wristlets 62 boys drawers 62 boys undershirts 16 men drawers 30 boys blouse suits 46 pinafores and women skirts plus summer pajamas and other pieces. Members should spend as many days as possible at the Red Cross room to meet the goal. No surgical dressings in August but work remains in other departments and September quotas will follow.

Volunteers Repair Powell Road North Of Alliance

Farmers and business men worked in the sun to fix the Powell road, which had been muddy and rough. Led by Purinton and Laing, teams hauled dirt, Magnesia filled low spots and a bridge was improved, with many local and country volunteers contributing. A community celebration at Happy Hollow closed the day and outlined plans for future road work.

Hemingford Branch Forms for Relief of Armenians Syrians

The Hemingford branch of the county relief society is formed with Alliance as headquarters. Robert Graham named county chairman. John Kin Bella elected Hemingford chair and Susie Davidson secretary. Nebraska’s county quota is 250000 and Box Butte 2500 as funds aim to aid Armenians and Syrians amid war, with plan to mobilize a county drive and distribute literature.

Alliance men seek to form company over new Black Hills marble vein

A veteran prospector located a promising white marble deposit in the Black Hills near Alliance. The vein runs nearly a mile with eight feet width at depth and lies three miles from the railroad. A competent engineer will inspect, and if favorable a company will be organized to develop the vein and capitalize on reduced freight costs.

Smith, a Burlington switchman, was lodged in the city jail this morning in a drunken condition. Officers said his appearance suggested he had been drinking lemon extract.
