George Rowding aged 25 is shot and killed at Bingham Nebraska at 2 PM. Ralph Dayley aged 22 is in Alliance hospital with a chest wound. The duel followed a dance dispute and a heated exchange near a livery barn.
The Herald reports its new telephone directories are the finest ever produced in Alliance. Typesetting borders and rules were set on The Herald’s Inter type with a blue cover. Nebraska Telephone Company’s work for copy and proofs proceeds efficiently under Alliance exchange manager Currie.
FATHER D DIES, CALLED EAST F. W. Hicks, a member of the Alliance postoffice force, received a telegram Saturday morning telling him of the death of his stepfather, C. W. Parkyn, at Algona, Iowa. Mr. Hicks left that noon for the funeral. Mr. Parkyn was a retired business man of Algona. He had been sick for about two years. Mr. Hicks will be gone about a week.
A report that remaining forest reserve lands in Nebraska would be opened caused agitation. Letters to Alliance newspapers and the commercial club urged influence to stop it. The forest service denied any plan to open lands while surveyors classified the lands.
Dennis Landrigan purchased a 640 acre ranch from Wm Boland near Ellsworth and will move there after loading his car on Monday. He also acquired several head of cattle and plans to become a full fledged rancher.
Howard at Tends Meeting with Burlington immigration official Mr Howard visiting Alliance to gauge advertising needs of the commercial club. He toured the area with J C McCorkle and noted ongoing rural growth and dairy farming as a key prospect for attracting farmers from Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa this fall. Ed Marks chaired a statistics committee for a potential free county booklet.
Hemingford reports widespread measles cases causing about half the school population to be absent. Local events include a Friday home talent show with Evalyn McBurney and others. Community notices mention births for the Curry and Planansky families and several residents traveling or visiting in nearby Alliance and Lincoln.
Ardmore South Dakota March 26 a fire in an implement warehouse at 2 pm threatened the business district. A strong 40 mph wind hampered efforts but the new motor chemical truck saved the town by directing chemical streams to igniteers on adjacent buildings and preventing spread.
The Herald notes an outbreak of tangoltia affecting the office boy and several townspeople. Doctors seek a remedy while the Sheriff may be asked to restrain the boy if the disease escalates. Emil Von Bergen says the tango craze has reached Grand Island and Mullen reports several attacks.
Petitions were filed with the city clerk today to place A. J. Macy Mrs. C. E. Wille and Mrs. J. A. Mallory on the ballots for school board members. Current candidates for three vacancies are C. A. Newberry W. H. Swan and A. B. Mote.
Emil Von Bergen, a traveling salesman for Carpenter Paper, says the tango craze spreading from Omaha to Grand Island will reach Alliance in weeks or days. He notes officers and mothers alike are fascinated, with police counting steps as they pace, while the trend is expected to burn out with time.
Sam Laskus a Greek veteran who left Allied service nineteen months ago to fight with the Grecian army in the Balkan wars returned Sunday to resume his job with the Burlington He saw action in major battles and was wounded in the leg at Balonika forcing four months of recovery He fought Turks and Bulgars but now prefers the Alliance and says the old country no longer appeals to him
The Alliance Volunteer Fire Department met Wednesday evening to assess a motor truck purchase. Members showed strong interest and pledged to support the election. Public information will be provided in The Herald so voters understand why the new truck is needed. Publicity committee members are L. A Surprise, C. L. Hill, and Lloyd C. Thomas.
D. Clem Deaver aide turned chief immigration agent Howard of Omaha arrives from a trip through the Big Horn Basin. He succeeds Deaver, visits local businessmen, and discusses thorough advertising plans for Box Butte county before leaving for Omaha tonight.
J. H. Vaughan returned Thursday noon from a pleasure trip to California. He visited Long Beach and other southern coast points after spending autumn there. Mrs. Vaughan plans to return by mid May.
Ben Brewster publisher of the Chadron Chronicle announces a new Intertype composing machine will be erected and installed by J. Carl Thomas, Herald's expert machinist, to keep up-to-date with modern printing needs.
A recital by students from the Alliance School of Music will be held at the Methodist church in Alliance on Thursday evening at 8 o clock. The program is described as very interesting and well arranged.
Alliance friends of Mr and Mrs James Hunter received a card from them written on the Pacific Ocean between San Diego and San Pedro. The note said they expected to start home last week with stops in San Francisco and San Diego. It stated little James was lost in San Diego and found about two hours later twenty six blocks from the hotel. He was having a good time and did not know he was lost.
Mrs Anna Welch travels from Bingham Nebraska to Lincoln for an appointment. An examination in Alliance is scheduled for the 28th of March for the post office position at this place.
Infant Merle Maresh, aged five months, died Friday morning at 6 30 after one week of illness. Funeral services were held at the Maresh home at 1 pm Saturday conducted by Revs Woten and Barrett. Card of Thanks from Mr. and Mrs. B A Maresh and Family expressing gratitude for support and sympathy.
Mr and Mrs M G Wambaugh hosted a social evening at their new home ten miles east of Alliance. Guests enjoyed singing and music, a delicious supper, and warm thanks were offered to the hosts. Attending were the Rock and Brandt families, Hofland family, and many others including Florence Ralls La Sturgeon Inez Brandt Josephine Hoff and Gladys Hier.
Chas. Him, a well known Alliance young man, has been appointed foreman of the freight transfer department. He will lead a crew of fifteen men in a responsible position and is experienced for the role.
The Alliance Fire Department expresses sorrow at the death of Louis Buechsenstein known as the Father of the department. The resolutions extend sympathy to his wife and children and request publication and minutes entry. A copy is to be sent to the bereaved family. T. P. ROLFBON.
