END OF A NOTABLE CAREER CAPTAIN MAPES DIES
Captain D P Mapes, founder of Ripon and a founder of the Republican Party, dies at Winneconne Wisconsin after a brief illness. Born in New York in 1708 he helped select Ripon site in 1840s and aided building the city and Ripon College. He was among early Northwest Masons and joined with Major Bovay and Horace Greeley in inaugurating the party in a Ripon schoolhouse. His death marks the end of a notable career.
