Others, including children, perished as the craft foundered. an additional drowning occurred later on Wolf River near Memphis when John Bowen his wife and child were swept away fording the river.
A rain driven fire in Lucas Ohio destroyed the Jota Charles block and two adjoining houses after a store dynamite stash exploded. Two men died and about twenty five people were injured as villagers fought the blaze with buckets due to lack of fire apparatus. Local news also mentions unrelated items about English aristocracy and American riflemen in Berlin.
The House approved the tariff bill by 184 to 142 amid party lines. Amendments raised duties on certain yarns and wool, lowered fuel and stone rates, extended protections for rugs and carpets, freed sugar up to a point, and kept many provisions as reported by the Ways and Means committee. The Senate finance panel is expected to align with higher wool duties, while many cotton and textile duties shift with broader protection for domestic production.
A San Francisco morning paper details a plot by wealthy English and Los Angeles San Diego figures to seize Lower California, form a republic, then join the United States. An English company would fund $100,000, Ensenada warehouse stocked with arms, while Mexican officials’ policies allegedly harmed investor lands and mines.
James Hendrick, 65, with intoxication as factor, shot his wife at No Ann street Chicago and then killed himself, leaving injuries considered fatal while witnesses note a domestic dispute precipitated by drink and a failing relationship.
