A Quebec fire gutted the Longue Pointe Lunatic Asylum ten miles below Montreal destroying the building and its records. About 1,300 inmates were housed with around fifty fatalities. most victims were women in upper wards. Firemen, nurses, and nuns attempted rescues as walls collapsed and flames surged. Survivors wandered muddy grounds, with authorities arranging shelter in nearby convents and Montreal exhibition buildings.

May 9 report details a disastrous blaze at Preston near Norwich destroying the Chenango County asylum and pauper house. Nine inmates, all inmates of the idiot ward, burned alive as guards and keepers could not reach them. In Wrraanaron Kansas a Southern Kansas freight wreck killed engineer William IL Macks and fireman Amela Meigs when a boiler explosion sent the engine over a trestle. Six cattle cars telescoped into a ditch, 125 cattle killed, engine parts found 600 feet away.
