Pitched as miracle cures, some boast dramatic effects and wide usage, with testimonials and dime store pricing appended by local druggists in Wellsville and South Bend.
At Homestead Pa on July 7 the Pinkerton guards engaged by strikers were disarmed after a violent assault on barges and the mill area. Mobs set fire to the boats and warehouses, leaving 11 Pinkerton wounded and 1 dead in the chaos. Hugh O’Donnell urged restraint while the mob forced the surrender and escorted the Pinkertons to the opera house.
