The Second Day session in Omaha opened with Temporary Chairman Ellington of Georgia and welcomes from Omaha Mayor Bemis. Ben Terrell of Texas responded for the convention, a gavel carved from Washington Mount Vernon timber was presented, and credentials and rules committees began work. Debate raged over ballot procedure, seating of veterans, and road-rate redress as tensions between factions surfaced.
The second day of the convention began with Geo E. Washburn reporting broad support for Senator J. H. Kyle. H. L. Loucks of South Dakota was named permanent chairman and Tom W. Hayes became chief secretary. Loucks praised harmony and urged that nominees be chosen by the people, not the machine, while disparaging the Gresham boom in favor of Weaver.
In Topeka Kansas the Republican convention reconvened after midnight and completed five ballots for governor. A W Smith secured the nomination on the fifth ballot with fourteen votes more than required, and the choice was made unanimous. R R Moore was later nominated for lieutenant governor on the third ballot, also unanimously.
Madison July 2 The Wisconsin Senate and House reportedly adopted different reapportionment measures when the special session adjourned. Assemblyman Hall argued no bill was legally adopted, creating a sensation but no remedy as quorum failed. Republicans cheer the development, citing gerrymander implications.
Madison, Wis July 4 The secretary of state published notices of election and cut off an appeal to the supreme court on apportionment law passed by the extra session of the legislature which has just closed.
The Tenith congressional Republican convention at Boone nominated J. P. Dolliver by acclamation while the Seventh district Republicans renominated J. A. L. Hull for congress by acclamation. A Dubuque church janitor, Joseph Brandol, learned a relative died in England leaving 2,000,000 to heirs. Incident reports include a Cedar Rapids robbery of Tom Braddy for 85 dollars, a Dubuque boy injured from a 100 foot fall, and a Marshalltown gas electric franchise vote passing 1,408 to 7.
The Iowa Republican state convention opened at 11 am in Des Moines Grand Opera House renominating McFarland Beeson and Stone without opposition. McCarthy won auditor on first ballot and Perkins railroad commissioner on first ballot. Cummins elector at large anti prohibition and Remley a Prohibitionist were chosen on ballots. Resolutions report sparked a disorderly debate over county option and prohibition, leading to a majority platform adoption and adjournment. The State Temperance alliance meets to consider a prohibitions plank. Republican leaders say prohibition unlikely as a party tenet in Iowa.
