At Peoria Illinois on July 18 a cyclone struck the Folsom steamship during a river voyage with about sixty on board. The vessel sank rapidly in the storm as cries were drowned by the tempest. Rescue attempts followed with the Rock Island line and police aiding, but several passengers were lost to the waves and many bodies remained unrecovered.
A Peoria river tragedy leaves fourteen confirmed dead after the sinking of the Frankie Folsom on the Illinois River on July 14. Authorities caution exaggeration but note known volcanic activity and nearby craters threatening renewed eruptions. Also, a Milwaukee fire destroys Beers livery stable killing 67 horses worth about 12000 dollars.
