Treasure Hidden Under Hay Found by 16 Year Old

Irving Weller, 16, on his father A W Wellers farm north of Algona, unearthed a grain sack under a hay shock. Inside the sack lay a coat with about 125 pieces of German made silverware, including knives forks teaspoons and more, many with Rogers trademarks. Some pieces feature engraved souvenirs of Columbus returning to Spain, the Maine battleship, and the U S Capitol. Also included are a child’s fork and spoon engraved Alma 1889. The hoard likely came from a hotel era, and a passerby with a sack seen 2 3 months ago may explain its hiding. Jewelry shows age and wealth in the find. Also notes offerings of barred Plymouth Rock eggs 25c per set and oxford shoes at $2.00 from Galbraith’s Shoe Store.
