Eleven Killed as Passenger and Freight Trains Collide Near Raymond
A Illinois Central passenger train and a freight train collided on a curve one mile west of Raymond at 2 45 pm. Eleven people died and two were injured as the passenger train, crowded with travelers, collided head on with the freight. The Pulverized wreckage and scale of the crash were noted, with seven Waterloo residents among the dead and several unnamed passengers included in the casualties. The disaster was blamed on misreading orders by the freight crew who had left Raymond against orders. The passenger cars, including Pullmans, helped cushion the impact and prevented greater loss of life. Additional notes include a brief obituary of Cyrus Smith of Webster City and unrelated village anecdotes.
