Angona July 30 a severe storm brought a close call for A. Simpson of Whittemore. While working in a field he unhitched three horses and sheltered beside one. A bolt struck, killing the horse and throwing Simpson to the ground. The other two horses ran off. he was found unconscious but revived after being brought to the house.
A night of peril in nwa City July 80 left Mrs John Kiitwaman and three family members poisoned by corn cakes tainted with arsenic from poisoned cornmeal intended for rats. All four are recovering. In Marshalltown Iowa a girl, daughter of David Parker, died after eating two or three tablets of strychnine found in a box, before aid could arrive.
In Oskaloosa Titly 30 Dick, six year old son of John Cockerell handling a small file pulled the trigger and instantly killed his four year old brother. The bullet pierced the heart in an underlined tragedy.
Tim Burke, from Illinois, working on the Rock Island grade in Oskaloosa Iowa, killed himself with a knife after being discharged for drunkenness. He was about forty, and his identity was not known locally.
In Dubuque Iowa July 30 Andy Knuteson an Union Electric Company employee received 600 volts while connecting wires from the head car to the trailer. He was stunned and badly burned but expected to recover. Charles Horschein of Milwaukee shops fell twenty feet from a ladder and lies at death with brain concussion after a Wednesday night incident.
Senior Senator Allison lies seriously ill at his Dubuque home with Brights disease. He has weakened drastically and may not recover enough to travel to Des Moines for the August 1 state convention. Friends and doctors fear political strain could worsen his condition and doubt he will attend.
Belle Plaine Iowa July 30 The Republican judicial convention met to fill Judge Caswell's vacancy nominating Colonel J M Parker of Marshalltown on the first ballot Benton county delegation backed Parker, the Marshall county candidate.
A thief entered Henry Lefen hant’s Occidental hotel room by climbing from the kitchen and through a window, stealing a gold watch and 65 dollars. No clues for the burglars were found. Detective Sims had his pocket picked that same day, losing 16 dollars cash and a 400 dollar bank certificate while aiding officers on a sting operation against tramps and yeggs.
Mason City Iowa reports two more alleged freight car breakers caught by Shor Holdren at Albert Lea on Wednesday evening. The suspects named Shorty Allen and Will Wagner. Allen known as a petty offender. other suspect accused as a safe blower who opened a local safe last winter. jailed at Albert Lea after refusing to accompany officers without requisition papers.
Ex Governor Larrabee and Senator Dolliver will attend Des Moines for the second annual meeting of the town association for the study and prevention of tuberculosis. Dr Z W Kime of Fort Dodge and other physicians will present papers as Iowa officials and doctors discuss a $50 000 state sanatorium appropriation and a broad educational campaign to combat TB statewide.

They claim the world ends in 1916 with 144,000 elect to be transformed and live forever at Benton Harbor Michigan headquarters.
In Forest City Des Moines July 28 Iowa bachelors and spinsters held a state convention to discuss government and birth rates. They endorsed Governor Cummins, urged marriage as the race’s foundation, and joked Cupid’s influence may convert some to matrimony. The meeting, led by Clinton Merrick, featured debate on social policy and population and concluded with rumors of marriages forming from bachelorhood and spinsterhood.
In Iowa City on July 28 a boat capsized on the river north of town plunging Harl Kura and Leo Cola into twenty foot deep water. After a desperate struggle Harold Fitzgerald rescued them and is noted for rescuing nearly a dozen others from drowning in the Iowa River over the past five years.
In Montour Iowa one third of the town's business district was destroyed by a fire yesterday afternoon. The blaze caused an estimated loss of about 10000 dollars. The fire started in James Stewart's restaurant from an exploding gasoline stove.
A Moorhead stable fire at Frank Scoy's farm destroyed a large barn with five carcasses found though six horses were known to be stabled. Authorities believe one horse was stolen before the blaze, with possible suspicion on Ballantyne or others connected to the barn.
Angry citizens in a small city burned a dog after it bit several people. The animal was killed and incinerated in a furnace amid public fear of rabies. Surgeons warned hydrophobia risks while authorities tried to calm the uproar and prevent further violence.
Coroners jury in Dubuque exonerates Wilton Cushing from blame in the drowning of William Sutter on the Mississippi River Friday night. Sutter and Cushing were intoxicated in a boat. Sutter fell overboard and drowned. Cushing claimed he called for help but could not see in the darkness. Mason City July 27 Guy Trebilcock Mason City employee at a brick and tile factory was seriously injured when a large pane shattered during handling. An elongated fragment penetrated the knee under the kneecap and protruded beyond the leg, with glass fragments embedded in the wound. Physicians regard the accident with concern.
Charlie Pletcher eighteen son of Ed Fietcher of Gillette Grove township suffered a severe injury when a cultivator dragged him after he alighted to adjust flynets. A cultivator shovel pierced his right thigh and opened flesh along most of the thigh. Doctors believe his life can be saved, but he will remain a cripple.
A large barn on the J. B. Moorhead farm near Moorhead Iowa burned to the ground early yesterday morning. Six horses died in the flames, five owned by Frank Vanscoy and one trotter owned by Charles Ballantyne. Authorities believe sleeping tramps started the fire. Separately Des Moines officials raised telephone assessments statewide with the Iowa Telephone Company up from 881000 to 462000 and the Long Distance unit from 177000 to 248640, an average levy of 41.9 mills, up 1.9 mills.

Chicago Great Western president J B Stickney was offered a seat on the Interstate Commerce Commission by the President. The proposal, reported in the Journal, notes Stickney’s potential placement amid rail and commerce policy discussions.
