Five steamboats for a Riel shipping company were tested in front of imperial navy representatives and multiple shipping firms. The trial carried a full load of 200 passengers, and the vessel showed a hole and flooding in the engine room but retained about a foot of freeboard above water to meet the test conditions.

In Clearfield Indiana on August 6 during a match between Cherokee Indiana and the local team, the grandstand at the ballpark collapsed, tossing spectators to the ground. Gladys Smith and Madge Edwards, daughters of local residents, suffered leg fractures while many others were bruised or hurt, though the total injuries were not as severe as feared.
Elmer Huggett 19 of Marble Rock died after his right arm and leg were severed by train wheels while passing between two electric cars on an excursion from Clear Lake to Mason City. He had worked six months at Sundell cafe and was scuffling in the car when the fatal incident occurred. His father James Huggett learned of the tragedy and rushed toward Marble Rock.
An unidentified man about 20 was found dead between the railroad tracks in Chariton yards. He appeared attempting to board a passing train. He had been seen here yesterday and claimed Leon as his home. A Tetelot in his pocket was addressed to N Murphy as the sole clue to identify him.
Governor Cummins appointed John M Parker of Marshalltown to be judge of the Benton Tama Marshall district succeeding Judge Obed Caswell who died recently. The Republican judicial convention had nominated Parker as the regular candidate for election in the district this year, making the appointment align with that recommendation.
William Wilson was held on a statutory charge after a preliminary hearing in Onawa Iowa. He was bound over to the Monona county grand jury with bonds set at $1,000. The alleged assault involved Edith Weidner then 11 years old, with testimony from the girl her mother and Dr Battle. Wilson was a cook at the Hotel Monona and the girl had acted as his assistant.
New York August 6 The general education board has issued conditional appropriations from the John D. Rockefeller fund totaling 312,500 for higher education to nine colleges across the United States. Among the institutions and amounts are Coe College Cedar Rapids Iowa 80000 Washburn College Topeka Kansas 25000 and other gifts contingent on additional funding from other sources.
August incident reports Charles L. Cole and his daughter Mrs Towner narrowly escaping drowning after a launch struck them on Clear Lake. The rowboat occupants clutched the launch rail and were saved. Mrs Fr Kuppinger, swimming in four feet of water, was rescued by Sam F Handy after losing balance and nearly drowning.
In Toledo Ohio on August, Judge Kinkade was sustained by the common pleas court with the panel exonerating him from any suggestion of leniency or promise by attorneys for the fee trust In the ice cases the court affirmed Kinkades rulings in every part of the appeal ruling Babcock joined in the decision.
Milwaukee August 6 The Journal reports a second Milwaukee party may try to drag John Dietz from his Camaron dam stronghold. R T D Graf a former pulpist and current private detective plans to organize a posse to accomplish the act, seeking to free Dietz from captivity as hinted by the dispatch.
Des Moines Aug 1 Cummins delegates from Scott county were seated in the district caucus and the Second district backed Cummins men for the state committee and credentials. Joseph R Lane Davenport named as credentials member giving Cummins control. McCoy Clinton re elected state committeeman with Roseh for credentials. Standpatters win on resolutions. Dallas delegates unseated in Seventh district. Fifth district caucus remained standpatters control.
In Des Moines on August 1 a district caucus selected S. D. Rinner of Rock Rapids as the district's state committee member to succeed George Scott of Sioux City. A. B. Funk of Spirit Lake became the district's resolutions committee member. P F Faville of Buena Vista joined the credentials committee. I Watkins of Hawarden joined the permanent organization committee. W C Fenney of Ida County was named vice president. Shaon Fisher presided. D C Shull was withdrawn after jeers from Cummins delegates. All elections were by acclamation. Perkins delegates abstained.
Henry Jones aged 19 died of typhoid fever at Mason City after his parents were away with a party in Yellowstone. The illness progressed rapidly and the parents could not be notified until the father reached Mason City. The mother remained in Minneapolis unaware of the tragedy.
Police and a citizen posse combed a schoolhouse three miles east of Honey Creek for William Jackson in a thwarted case of attempted assault on Mrs Emer Robertson. Jackson remains at large as authorities abandon the local hunt. Also report from OsKaloosa suggests Tim Burke may have murdered a companion known as Shorty before fatally stabbing himself, with search parties scouring woods for another man.
Ottumwa reports a morning blaze that began at 10 o'clock in a Dagget’s Livery barn and spread to nearby barns and dwellings in the business district. Estimated loss exceeds $160,000 with partial insurance coverage. fire still raging at a late hour. Reports from Newa of the State, Ottumwa, Iowa, August 4.
Davenport Aug 4 a sensational assault on J A De Armond alderman at large and physician brother of Congressman De Armond of Missouri occurred after a city council session over city fighting contract prices. The attacker J W Walsh secretary of Davenport Electric Light Co and Walsh Bros owner of plants in Davenport Clinton and Burlington was restrained by bystanders. Arrests expected. Also Mason City reports M L Jackson farm hand sues John Hanson for 600 damages and thumb injury after a wage dispute and alleged assault in 1906.
Dr Newell Dwight Hillis of Brooklyn will deliver the sixteenth annual Highland Park college commencement address in Des Moines Iowa Aug 4. The 314 graduates span 14 states with Iowa at 224 including 56 from Des Moines. The college has grown to 2148 annual attendees and is lauded as the largest uncatholic school built by no church or millionaire. Dr Lucian H Follansbee gave the baccalaureate sermon as commencement week concludes.
In Towa City on August 4 a dog believed mad frothing at the mouth attacked Carl Parrott 12 while he played by the Towa river. Surgeons performed extensive wound treatment and cauterizing in an effort to prevent hydrophobia. A horse also bit Edith Look 9, severing a finger joint.
Warren Clark a longtime resident and county sheriff of this county was killed in a farm accident while cutting oats. A runaway selfbinder dragged him two city blocks, severing both legs. Charles Simpson, passing farmer, freed him, but Clark died within minutes on his farm two miles west of town.
Aug利 The town of Moorhead Iowa is repairing after a torn up state and laying cement walks. Homeworkmen handle work as new water system progresses. The election this week decided in favor of installing waterworks.
Colfax August 2 The eleventh Iowa state Epworth League assembly opens next Wednesday for a two week session with Robert McIntyre lecturing on Lincoln and Secretary Leslie M Shaw as major speakers. Two hundred tents will fill the grounds by week’s end with reservations already from Marshalltown Newton Grinnell Mitchellville Des Moines Brooklyn Manson Cherokee Victor Pella Stuart and Haberville.
In Monmouth Iowa two local fishers John Casa and John Belcher confessed after a 81 bass catch on Mineral creek near the Maquoketa river. They paid fines totaling over 34 dollars per fish with Cass fined 168.70 and Belcher 84.25 for multiple counts. The cases were heard in Belcher's own court led by Justice Belcher. Deputy Carson pursues dynamiting suspects near Canton.
Ray Mc Master a 17 year old of Glenn Falls Idaho died after an operation for bana cancer. His left leg was amputated at the hip and he succumbed six hours later. Lightning killed cattle during a heavy storm in the area Sunday night. John Borshen, declared insane, jumped into the river at Osage while awaiting commitment to a commission. Democrats meeting to choose delegates endorsed Bryan for president.
A Laid out farmer Felton from Marshalltown was beaten by two men near his brother’s home while visiting Melbourne. The assailants stole $30 and fled. Felton is expected to recover. A reward is offered for the attackers. Also in Des Moines reports on Iowa crop conditions for the past week noting cooler days, variable rainfall, ample soil moisture, and harvest progress across hay, oats, barley, spring wheat, corn, pastures, late potatoes, and apples.
A restaurant proprietor sustained a severe injury resulting in the loss of an eye after an altercation. The incident involved a torn bottle and several bystanders, with local authorities investigating the sequence of events and the individuals present.
