Directors Reengage Teachers for 1930 31 School Year

The school board, in regular session on Tuesday evening, extended invitations to the entire teaching staff for the 1930 31 year at the same salaries. The roster lists Dice as principal Fleming as assistant, Rastede in grammar, Creasy in intermediate, and Snyder in primary. The board cites past year progress and a spirit of cooperation as reason to avoid frequent staff changes. A. H. Olds presides, W. D. Burns is clerk, L. L. Slocum is director.

Canlin Appointed to Prosecute Whiteside Bank Case

Attorney General Carlstrom empowered Judge Telleen to appoint an attorney to prosecute the Whiteside County State Bank of Fulton case. Canlin of Rock Falls was chosen to act in Beil’s capacity but declined to try the case, offering to assist instead.

Rural teachers and eighth graders prepare for finals

Eighth grade pupils across the county will take final exams on April 25 at Kulton Morrison Prophets Town and Sterling. The top averages will determine the 8th grade diploma recipients to be awarded May 8 in Morrison. Former Albany lady's husband dies at home in Omaha. Robert Carlyle dies from a paralytic stroke after gardening work. He visited Albany years ago with his wife Mae Beeken, sister to Charles Beeken. Beeken attended services held April 20.

Miss Harriett Seyler Wins County Declamatory Honors

Miss Harriett Seyler, daughter of Kennard Seyler of Arthur, NL, captured first honors in a county declamatory contest for school grades. She presented a reading and earned praise, with pride shared by her maternal grandmother Mrs Harriett Lewis and great grandmother Mrs Eleanor Culbertson of the village.

Meeting of 500 Club at Dolans in Illinois home

Mr and Mrs Edwin Dolan entertained Friday evening with their card club and guests. After a six thirty dinner for eighteen, spring flowers from Mrs C A Olds garden decorated the table. Guests included Mrs Chancey West nee Marion Olds of Galesburg Ill and Mr and Mrs Charles George of Milwaukee Wis former club members. Andy Trent and Mrs L H Hite won the game. Next meeting May 1 at the home of Mr and Mrs Earl E Hill.

Pioneer Marck Burghardt Dies at Clinton Iowa Home

Funeral services held Wednesday for Marck D Burghardt at the Grant home in Clinton and Garden Plain Presbyterian church. Born in Massachusetts in 1884 he moved to Whiteside and Fulton counties, married Emily Baker in 1901, had seven children, fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Albany friends attended the service.

Gerald Sharer Celebrates Ninth Birthday With Party

Last Friday April 18 Master Gerald Sharer son of Mr and Mrs Lee Sharer observed his ninth birthday. In honor twenty three children were entertained at his home Saturday with games and amusements. Two birthday cakes pink and white each with nine candles. An accident occurred when Geralds sister Mary Lou fell on a stick splitting her chin requiring two stitches but no serious injury. After the fright the children enjoyed luncheon and gifts were given to the celebrant.

Joseph O Sharer Dies After Protracted Illness

Joseph O Sharer died after a long illness on April 21 1930 born August 6 1858 in Center County Pennsylvania. He married Ada Cotterell in Falls City Nebraska later lived in Oakland California then returned to Albany Illinois where he died. Survived by brothers Albert and Jerry Sharer and sisters Mrs Anna Ryersec and Mrs Luella Huggins. Funeral held at Albany Methodist Church with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Card of thanks from family.
