Chief Jim Rhodes warns bicycles are a rising traffic problem in Petersburg. He cites recent close calls due to riders ignoring signals and riding on sidewalks. He urges riders to stay right, use arm signals, stop at intersections, and yield to pedestrians on sidewalks.
Local youths show interest in a Junior High camp at Rainbow Glacier camp nine miles from Haines. July 20 to 26, $16 includes transportation on the Princeton Hall, beds, and meals. Eligibility ages 12 to 15 or entering eighth grade. contact Mrs. C. A. Wilder to register.
Mr and Mrs Harold Jones welcomed a baby girl on Saturday June 17 at 8 02 p m The infant was named Darlene Pearl and weighed 8 ounds 1442 ounces
Wrangell celebrated a lively weekend with youngsters like John Hammer and Tom Goodman cavorting about town. A predawn ship launching drew attention as a barefoot girl walked barefoot, while Albie Heim Dahl noted the event’s humor. Fred Hanford’s new cottonwood plywood quarters impressed locals and sunlight warmed the sunburned chairman Don House for his efforts.
No official records broken in the heat wave yet. Sunday reached 81.3 degrees, with 43.1 degrees as the week's low on Tuesday. A 20 degree gap compared with last year. June 16 1949 high 61 and low 39. Precipitation remained light at less than .05 inches this year and .81 inches last year.
Corp Vernon Bynum 29 Hartford Alabama was missing since June 10 in Chugach foothills. He hobbled to an Alaska Road Commission camp southeast of Anchorage and was taken to Elmenorf Field Air Force hospital with a gunshot wound and malnutrition. He described a 12 day ordeal aided by woodlore experience and a squirrel meal while surviving in rugged terrain.
One of the United States' famous choirs from Princeton Seminary will perform at the Lutheran church in Petersburg on July 2 at 11 a.m. The church program occurs in the absence of Pastor Hopp. The choir comprises ministerial students of the seminary under the Presbyterian church and is touring Alaska in June and July. Their first concert was set for Haines yesterday.

Wednesday Rotary luncheon noon Recreation dining room. Episcopal Guild silver tea Sandy Beach 2 to 4 p.m.
Under Dr Bailey's direction an evening fireworks show is set for Sasby Point between 10 and 11 PM on July 4. The hour long spectacle will mimic a Legion display from two years ago and feature aerial bombs star shells and sky bombs. Bud Clemons Les Leatherberry and Ralph Smith will light $300 worth of fireworks using homemade mortars and rocket launchers. Glen Leach advised safety precautions from Northern Sales in Juneau where the items were purchased. The finale includes a large bomb and a parachute delivering an American flag.
The town council unanimously approves a $380 thousand government contract for a new high school. Petersburg will pay about $190 thousand as the town’s share of a two story concrete building. Yearly payments will be drawn from the Territorial tobacco tax. The finance committee will list delinquent utility and hospital accounts soon for review and action. Other business includes a full inventory of city materials and supplies.
Several Petersburg fishermen left this week to begin operations on the Italio river south of Yakutat. R. K. Gildersleeve sailed the Sea Bee and Bruce MacKechnie the Huscombe by plane. Arne Trones took the Arne T with his son Finny and Lloyd Jorgenson, who will be joined later by Charles Whipple and George Nicholson. They expect to return in late August.
Members of Sons and Daughters of Norway invited to a Sunday picnic at Sandy Beach at 2 o clock. Nordstjern on No 23 to serve coffee. bring lunch. If weather turns bad, picnic postponed to next week. Regular business meetings suspended until Sept 7. social sewing evenings to be held first and third Thursdays.
Shrimp packing declined with few high grade shrimp. Kayler-Dahl shrimp packers received 189 boxes of 150 pounds by Thursday. Wrangell Shrimp Packing Co. reported 37 percent of 200 pound boxes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Alaskan Glacier Sea Foods processed 5000 pounds of shrimp meat by Thursday.
The Petersburg Girl Scouts start weekly French lessons with French-Canadian instructor Mrs. Caroline Love. Adviser Rosemary Trones says the group aims to write to Scouts in foreign countries and form a world friendship network. Attending the first session were Miriam Benson Dolly Guthrie Marjorie Haltiner and Mary Ellen Thynes.
Lloyd T Swanson chair of the aviation committee reported on a meeting with George S Schwamm Mr Johnson and May Fisher regarding a back town landing field. Johnson showed interest and asked that data be sent to the Territorial board in Anchorage for consideration. If approved the board will send a survey crew. The legislative committee reported on a proposed government cement plant in Alaska and the bill was tabled for later.
After a 36 year absence they head from Petersburg on July 1 aboard the S S Alaska for four months in Norway. They will visit twin brothers in Christiansund and film their trip for later release. They sail from New York on the Strangerfjord and plan to return in the fall with travel pictures.
The town council approved one mile of road resurfacing with crushed rock south of town by a three to two vote. Three thousand yards at 6 to 9 inches deep will be bought from Reed and Martin at 5.50 per yard. Support came from Mrs. Ben Stokke Ed Hager man and Jack Longworth while Lloyd Swanson and J By White opposed. Georgeo Tloyd, sixth member, was in Chicago attending a Salvation Army convention.
A city road crew led by Kenny Welde repairs Wrangell avenue bridge and Front street near Roy Torwick’s house after a truck loaded with gravel damaged 16 cap pilings and 160 strings of decking. Don Dingman, a Forest Service worker, drove over the failing structure causing a bent crank shaft. only road and truck were damaged.
