The annual Boy Scouts encampment at Fort Richardson runs August 7 to 14 with Petersburg boys Bruce Jones Jimmy Wheeler Ronnie Sarff Bob Lloyd and Jim Rhodes. Air Force transport from Juneau covers the trip costing $10 plus medical certificate and parental permission. Last year Dickson Taylor attended and may return. The color motion picture of Alaska was shown to the Chamber of Commerce at Tuesday noon at the Recreation. Dr. W W Bailey presented the film and out of town guest Clay Scutter of the Office of Indian Affairs spoke, noting plans for a cold storage plant at Hydaburg.
Calendar notes list Tuesday events including Lutheran Ladies Aid luncheon at the church basement 1 p.m. and Chamber of Commerce noon at Recreation. Business and Professional Woman's Club dinner and business at Recreation 7 p.m. Wednesday features Tea at Episcopal church 2 to 4 p.m. and Rotary clue at Recreation noon. Thursday L.O.O.M. 8 p.m. at Sons of Nor Wax Hall.
Over 60 Petersburg residents will travel by more than 20 outboards to Wrangell for a banquet and a challenge claiming Wrangell boats are faster. The event kicks off with a 9 PM Elks club reception, boat races at 11 AM Sunday, and Coast Guard escort.
Wildlife Agent Hosea Larber of the Alaska Game Commission announced Thursday afternoon the closing date for halibut fishing in Areas 1 A 3 and 4 and 4 3 1 A will take effect at midnight on July 25. The announcement came from the Alaska Game Commission member.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday for Mrs. Helen Ronning in the Sons of Norway hall with Rev. Hugh Hall officiating. Burial followed in Petersburg cemetery. Ronning, born September 12, 1899, in Holly Minnesota, operated Helen's Place in Wrangell before moving to Petersburg two years ago. Her death, attributed to natural causes, occurred late Sunday night. body found by U S Marshal Ralph Smith and W L Dundin after friends alerted authorities.
Territorial highway officer John Monapgle is in Petersburg this week conducting a routine survey of road conditions and traffic status and will return this fall for a car safety check.
Announcement on June 9 shows Petersburgh receives $106,250 dam cost estimate as part of a $597,160 allotment for 54 public works projects. John Dortgensinker, district engineer for the Department of the Interior’s Territories division, headquarters in Juneau, notes the agreement will be sent from Washington soon.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Janey of Los Angeles are visiting Petersburg as guests of Mrs. Ted Johnson. They arrived aboard the Printess Louise last Tuesday and will stay until the end of June.

The Alaska Development Board will screen a new Alaska film at the Chamber of Commerce meeting next Tuesday. The Lutheran church venue will host a free public showing at 8 o clock for children and adults. A full hour will include the Forest Service documentary Smoke Jumpers after the main feature, then the film will be airlifted to Haines.
A. Herbert Mjorud, aged 39, was ordained at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church with seven ministers participating. He will serve Nazareth English Lutheran in Minneapolis. Mjorud, from a Petersburg lineage, captained a 1929 Alaska basketball champions team and rowed for the University of Washington. He is married with two sons. his wife Gunhild Anderson was a Port Alexander bookkeeper.
Mrs. Anne Lund and her two children Denny and Dianne arrived home aboard the S S Alaska after a lengthy vacation in Seattle Tacoma and vicinity. Mr. Lund had already returned about two weeks earlier.
Night fireworks directed by Dr. W. W. Bailey will light Sasby Point across the Narrows from Petersburg. A colorful float parade and children's costume contests set the festive tone with larger prize money for adults. Foot and bike races, rumored one mile run, two dances, and a pie eating contest backed by Gordon Parr of Parrs Bakery complete the holiday events.
Winners of the territory wide Alaskagram contest will be announced Saturday June 24 after tie breaking solutions are checked. top seven may face additional tie breakers if needed with three day payment deadline. The Press distributes 25 copies of the Alaska Almanac to participants.
The Girls Scouts organize a bake sale at the library from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday July 1 to fund their own uniforms. Cakes pies and pastries are provided by the American Legion Auxiliary in appreciation for the girls help with last May’s poppy sale.
Misses Marjorie Rhodes and Patty Wasvick are visiting the Kasheets Bay residence of Mr. and Mrs. Al Zuver. The two girls are anticipated to return home this weekend.
The Episcopal Church Guild met at Mrs. Oscar Sandvik’s home with large attendance. Members heard Father Hugh Hall on church vestments and learned of a catering service by Mrs. Sandvik to raise funds for the church building. Proceeds from puffs sales and garden offerings will benefit the church. The next meeting is set for Friday, June 23 at 8 p.m. at the Leon Hasbrouck home with Miss Barbara Price as hostess.
Rotary members heard Orvill Fleming discuss cotton growing in the San Joaquin valley of California. Fleming, manager of a Madeira cotton gin, has 16 years of perfect Rotary attendance and is visiting with his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and wife, who recently moved for Polar Star Air Service and Alaska Island Airlines.
The week brought clear skies and warm weather with many townspeople enjoying picnics and daily beach visits. The Jaycee outboard excursion to Wrangell is planned for tomorrow as residents hope for continued sunshine. High reached 71.3 on June 15, low 49 on June 14 at the CAA station. Precipitation in 1949 that period totaled 1.43.
