Four 28 inch diameter metal porcelain Welcome signs ordered by the Jaycees have arrived and await Town Council approval for posting. Signs read Welcome to Peters burg with the Jaycee emblem in white on blue. Locations: City Float, City Airplane Float, Public Dock, Kayler-Dahl dock.
Mr and Mrs Eilert Holbeck and their son Douglas arrived in Petersburg and are living above Colps Cash Grocery. Mr Holbeck will assist in the operation of the Specialty Processors.
Saturday on the spot shoe shining at Main Street from 10 to 12 and 2 to 4. Girl Scouts bake sale at the Library from 2 to 5. Monday a pre Fifth of July dance by firefighters at the school gym. Tuesday all day Fourth of July celebration. Wednesday a benefit tea at Mrs. P. M. Ridley’s home at Sandy Beach from 2 to 4.

J B Warrack, Seattle contractor, won a 339000 contract to build a ten room concrete school at Petersburg. The two story structure, to be the town's largest cement building, should be finished in March under Alaska Public Works. Local workers will be hired as available, with supervision by Larry Brandt.
Petersburg residents Bud Olson and Trygve Hansen won prizes in the Alaskaagrams contest. Olson earned $250 third prize with help from his wife Dagny, while Hansen was among three runners-up for $50. Olson had never won before. Hansen recalled a prior small prize in Kelso Washington. Olson’s prize money funded a new radio phonograph. contestants yet to receive the Alaska Almanac should contact the Press office.
The S. S. Alaska held up four hours in Seattle due to engine trouble and lost 12 hours north, arriving Petersburg Sunday morning instead of Saturday. Passengers include Leon Gonzalio and Mrs. Joseph Rude plus Adolph Mathisen and Dick Hanson. The Coastal Monarch, Silver Wave, and Baranof docked, loading 275 tons of frozen fish for Alaska. Palisana slated July 13 to take on frozen fish.
The Forest Service announced work on six area trails this week. Trails being cleared include Green Rocks Harvey's Lake Castle River Kasheets Lake Duncan Canal to Portage Bay and the Dunean Canal trail to Petersburg.
Ken Welde reports a new gravel road will run adjacent to the wooden street below the school to guide construction trucks to the site. City crews begin spreading crushed rock early next week on a one mile section south of town and resurface the strip with six to nine inches of rock.
Washington reports the Air Force is undecided about withdrawing all personnel from four Aleutian airfields. No link to Korea noted. Proposal to fund CAA operation of Shemya and Cold Bay kept as weather contingency. Northwest Airlines opposes the shutdown.

The 23 member choir directed by Dr David H Jones, a Westminster Choir faculty charter member and Princeton Seminary music director, arrives in Petersburg after touring Cuba Mexico and Canada. The group performs in Southeastern Alaska with a varied repertoire from plain song to modern works.
A Peters burg girl will reign over Labor Day Jaycee races. Jaycees proposed selecting a queen by town ballot to rule over the Alaska Outboard Championship races set for September 4. Jim Hammer was chosen to head the queen contest committee.
The Press announces a fiscal year end issue and details a Pacific Press Los Angeles purchase. A Model 8 Linotype replaces a 47 year old machine. Three magazines replace the old Betsy setup as the paper invites reader visits to see the addition.
Romey Atkinson, known for his Metlakatla basketball play, survived a Monday plane crash in Nichols Passage when the light seaplane piloted by Frank Purez dove 275 feet into the water after a stunt over the boat Clare. Eyewitnesses described the plunge as Purez losing control and disappearing beneath the surface.
The Petersburg Chamber of Commerce unanimously endorses a bill proposed to Congress by Delegate Bob Bartlett to empower Alaska public bodies to undertake slum clearance low rent housing and urban redevelopment. The measure would allow Territory agencies to carry out redevelopment decisions similarly to the 48 states, reducing dependence on the Alaska Housing Authority.
Trail work finished at three mile Delta Creek this week. A Geological survey team led by Albert Johnson and J L Colbert will spend two months mapping lakes and streams in Delta Creek Ruth Lake Cascade Creek Swan Lake and nearby areas for possible hydro power.
President Truman signed a bill allowing Canadian vessels to transport passengers and goods between Skagway and Haines, Alaska, Hyder, Alaska, and other points in Alaska, Canada, and the United States. The authorization extends until June 30, 1951, and continues a law enacted several years ago.
Cliff Roundtree S moves his business to the former U S commissioner’s office repainted this week by Jergen Norheim. The transfer occupies the first of the month from the Pastime Cafe location to the new Réliable Transfer office.

Three boys from Vashon Island Washington Arnold Hestness Gordy Steen and Rick Ober flew to Petersburg on Wednesday to work during the fishing season. They will join local crews for the summer fishing period.
Petersburg clubs plan a Sunday morning 10 o'clock voyage to Ketchikan for the Fourth of July outboard races. Six boats already committed with two larger vessels along. The Coast Guard will join the trip aboard a boat to Ketchikan and the Triton will carry spectators and small motors.
The Girl Scout bake sale runs from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Library with sponge cake lemon meringue pie and cookies on offer. Proceeds fund Scout uniforms. American Legion Auxiliary members supplied baked goods to support the girls.
Jay Lindblom, who recently left to work for Ellis Airlines in Ketchikan, returned to Petersburg early this week for a short visit with his parents Mr and Mrs Robert Lindblom. He arrived Monday, his day off.
The week ending June 29 saw a high of 68.8 degrees last Friday and a low of 47 on Monday. Total precipitation reached 0.86 inches, higher than last year's 1.28 inches, while year to year temperatures were about 10 degrees cooler at the same time.
