The Alamogordo town board voted 8 to 1 to deny L. C. Bivens a license transfer from Cloudcroft to the Lawrence addition near the New Mexico School for the Blind. Six petitions opposed the move, including local landowners and citizens, plus a resolution from the NM School for the Blind Regents citing welfare concerns for blind children.
The Town Board approved a 269576 budget presented by town manager Le Rutz. The plan, slightly higher than last year due to gas tax and disposal plant costs, totals 71 600 6 for bonded indebtedness including sinking fund interest and pledge. State Tax Commission hearings for Otero County are scheduled July 12 with Alamogordo Cloudcroft Aguordo and Tularosa sites and times.

In a special election last Friday Alamogordo voters approved switching from Town form to a city government with five commissioners and an appointive manager by 129 to 8. The move ends the current board and mayor terms and triggers a 90 day window to elect new commissioners. wards will be created and candidates must reside and own property within their district. The commissioners will pick a chairman and appoint a city manager, expanding the manager’s authority beyond the former Town structure.
Construction begins on a new Sunday School addition at Grace Methodist Church, a $15,000 project by Ray Matteson. The 20 by 50 foot concrete and wood structure on the southwest corner includes two floors with a concrete lower floor and hardwood second floor. Completion is planned in 120 days, with 60 days if no delays. John Copenhaver oversees the work. rooms will ease crowding as funds come from $7,500 cash, $1,500 pledges, and a $7,500 church extension loan to be repaid over five years.
District Judge WT Scoggins Jr. approved naturalization for Mrs. Angelina Yarter and Mrs. Maria Catanzarite. Catanzarite, married to Captain Francis J. Catanzarite, came from Wiesbaden in 1947 and arrived in the U S January 1948 to Fort Hamilton New York. Catanzarite works as electronics engineer at Holloman Air Force Base. Yarter arrived in Alamagordo Christmas Day 1947 with her husband Sergeant Bernard Yarter. They married in Naples 1944 and lived at Fort Hamilton since October 1947. The couple owns property on Fifteenth Street and has three children Antonio Maurice and Claude. The sergeant is assigned to SCEL formerly at Holloman and now White Sands Proving Grounds.
Summer session enrollment at Highland university in Las Vegas New Mexico topped 1700 registrants for the first term. Officials expect second term opening July 15 to push total past 2000 with more enrollees.
H. J. Hebbeln of the Division of Services to Blind met with Dr. Neal Quimby and Mark Shoesmith to discuss a possible federal grant for the School for Blind and Adult Training Center. A bill would fund about 60 percent of operating and equipment costs and 5 percent for administration, forecasting a $69,000 next year budget with $21,000 from state sources. Expansion plans include a second story to increase workshop space as trainee potential rises from 11 to over 100.
Pat Fowler was arrested after crashing through Holloman AFB east fence on June 6. He was taken to Santa Fe by the U S Marshal on a stolen car count and fined bonds set at 2500 dollars. He fled pursuit on dirt roads before being stopped at a service station. the case involves forged title and stolen car details.

Three people died in a fire that destroyed Joe Carillo’s home in the Mescalero area. The dead are believed to be Carillo and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cojo. A coroner’s jury investigated after the blaze and three bodies were found so badly burned they were unidentifiable. The trio were buried at Mescalero, with details of last seen times and items noted by investigators.
Most chairmen of the divisions and districts for the 1956 Otero County Fair are appointed by fair chairman James I Joy. Fair dates are September 22 to 24 with Mose Cauthen assisting Joy. other appointees include Ben Rutz produce chair, Duncar Campbell entertainment, Charles Cookson poultry, Walter Wade J club and judging, Murray E Morgan publicity, Herbert Bays finance, and Fred Gaye hobbies. District chairs are Orpha Wingfield Cloudcroft Jon T Cadwallader High Rolls Mountain Park D P Young Mescalero and Major D M Brown Holloman Air Base to organize community committees.
Judge W T Scoggin Jr schedules a grand jury session for Otero County on June 28 following petitions filed by Attorney Geo A Shipley. The drive began at a Community Center meeting this year and has attracted over 100 signatures, 117 of which were verified as taxpayer signers. The group seeks a complete investigation of all matters within grand jury jurisdiction, including possible gas company law violations.
Rapid progress on a pipeline project from Carl Ranch and Maruchi springs will boost Alamogordo's domestic water. Pipes are laid to connect individual springs to a central box and main line, with completion in six weeks. Expected output reaches 500 to 600 gallons per minute, serving two water rights before La Luz area needs.
Co D Cowart of Lordsburg won the bid of 250 944 dollars for grading draining and blacktop on 16.7 miles of state route 24 from Cloudcroft to Denny Bridge Cox Canyon. G P Russell mill superintendent of the M R Prestridge Lumber Co retires this week after 58 years in sawmill work. He began in Pawnee Louisiana in 1897 and has held multiple foreman roles. He moved to Alamogordo in 1989 and plans to stay home to hunt and fish.
