The Democratic National Committee creates a new campaigning method during a three day Jefferson jubilee in Chicago. President Truman and his cabinet plan more meetings across the country to bring government to the people and answer questions with facts ahead of the fall elections.
A Chicago discussion with leaders from diverse groups concluded the presidents FEPC measure will face insurmountable hurdles in Congress. Senator Hubert Humphrey praised Southern colleagues for their consistency while criticizing Republicans for hypocrisy over civil rights planks.
Democratic committeeman Johnathan Daniels of North Carolina denounces compulsory FEPC. Opposed by southern members as well as northern cities Chicago Philadelphia and Detroit favoring a nonbinding resolution with no enforcement. Southern Democrats may back a teethless policy.
President Truman drew strong applause in Chicago for two Fair Deal planks repeal of the Taft Hartley act and a housing program for low and middle income groups. He warned obstructionists must be removed if Congress fails to advance rent control and housing measures this session.
Sen Taft reiterates his forecast that President Truman’s program from the State of the Union will bankrupt the nation. He, like four years ago, reiterates the GOP stance as head of the policy committee during the 80th Congress.

Rol L Mullins of Holloman Air Force Base was found shot to death in his duplex at 701 Virginia Street around 4 30 PM Monday as officers entered to serve a warrant for assaulting his wife. A coroner's jury did not rule self inflicted death, a note near the body read I cannot live without you. Mullins had been editor of ordnance supply records at Holloman since 1949. Capt R C Harris is in charge of his effects and estate affairs.
A Republican victory caravan starts a three week grass roots tour of New Mexico on June 12 and stops in Alamogordo June 28. State Party Chairman John W. Knorr announces visits to sixty cities with gubernatorial candidate Ed Mechem and lieutenant governor candidate Paul Larra zolo joining initially. The send off occurs in Albuquerque June 11 at 2 p.m. with the full New Mexico slate expected.
James H. Joy, chair of the 1949 Otero County Fair and Ro deo, accepts the 1950 chairmanship. The Chamber of Commerce announces a first meeting for division chairmen on Friday June 9 at 7 30 p m in the Community Center. Constable Denney 276 Dungan Bret Oe ee.
Police hold Bass Carter Mullins, Jack Palms, and Natividad R. Cordero after a Saturday Tex Bar burglary. About $140 in pennies, 8 bottles of whiskey, cigarettes, and small merchandise stolen along with a wrist watch and lighter. Investigators traced footprints and pennies to a rail bridge and a cabin at 413 Delaware where Mullins slept.
Betty Gene Carrell five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Carrell of Tularosa was killed Tuesday afternoon at 5 40 pm after being struck by a pickup on the road in front of Tularosa high school The driver was Mrs Juanita Benivedez Patrolman Robert Badagher NMSP investigated Funeral services will be held at the Tularosa Methodist church with burial in the Tularosa cemetery Rev Reuben Ten Haken to officiate Betty Gene born February 25 1947 Her maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Jess Campbell of Mescalero.
Amanda Evelyn Daugherty a 70 year old Otero county pioneer died at her daughter Mrs Albert Jones home in Tularosa on Tuesday May 23 Graveside services were held May 24 at Truth or Consequences cemetery She was born Amanda Cridebring in Texas on August 15 1879 and came to New Mexico in 1895 She was married to A J Daugherty at Weed He died in 1941 Surviving daughters include Mrs Jones of Tularosa Mrs Willie Cook of Garrison Texas Mrs E B Barnhouse of Brownsville Texas and sons Colonel Fred Pat and R S all of Truth or Consequences
The M. R. Prestridge Lumber Company raised hourly wages for all production workers by 10 percent effective May 1 1950 boosting average annual earnings by about 225 dollars. Paid vacations of one to two weeks per year are offered based on service length.
Mary Ann Shanks and Margaret Rutz travel to Portales to attend the third annual New Mexico Girls State at Eastern New Mexico University. Delegates were chosen by high school faculty and juniors based on leadership, honesty, character, scholarship, courage, and cooperation.
Showers swept Otero County last Thursday delivering the first notable rain since October. Alamogordo recorded .46 inch while Sacramentos forests and Mesa country to the south saw varied totals. Cloud seeding experiments at Socorro and remarks by Dr. Workman and Dr. Langmuir tie the precipitation to planned study. La Luz Fresnal canyons and nearby areas added substantial runoff filling the town reservoir and supporting Alameda Park irrigation per Town Manager Ben Rutz.
Dr. S. E. Cooper notes 63.72 collected on Salvation Army Tag Day. About 12.74 locally will aid Otero county next year, while 50.98 supports a Home and Hospital in El Paso and Phoenix regional headquarters. Twenty percent returns to local work, with Rainbow girls selling the tags.
Commencement exercises for the First Baptist church will be held Friday evening June 9 at 7 30 in the auditorium of the new building. One hundred twenty three students attended the course with primary and junior classes showing highest enrollment and four officers enrolled. The Rev Tuttle Gamble praised parent and teacher cooperation. Students held a park picnic last Friday with the church providing beverages and each student bringing lunch.
The Fourth of July committee of the Chamber of Commerce has ordered fireworks for the White Sands display. Chairman Bill Anderson says the new company will provide a wider range of aerial and ground pieces including a huge Welcome set piece and 12 Magnesium flares of 50 000 candlepower. Committee members Bill Day Fred Roessler and Joe Moffett will oversee the setup next month.
A Tuesday morning crash near Bent killed George Washington Hall 71 and Ollie Hall 65 from Glendora California. Mae Hall ? injuries and J E Jordan uninjured. Investigated by Robert Badagher of New Mexico State Police. bodies prepared for shipment by Mullins O Dell.
Sheriff Wayne MacCommis and State Patrolman Robert Bada her arrested Walter Clyde Tolbert east of Mayhill about 11 p.m. Friday after he struck a Las Cruces car and fled, later overturning his vehicle while speeding toward Artesia. Tolbert, a parolee from Fort Leavenworth, was charged with drunken driving and leaving the scene. He had no license.
Mr and Mrs G W Goodrich of La Jolla California were injured when their Lincoln Zephyr overturned after a rear tire blowout about 3 pm Monday seven miles west of White Sands National Monument. He was cut on the left forearm and she suffered neck and cervical spine injuries. Their grandson was uninjured. The vehicle was demolished and Hendrix McKinley Motor Co stated the incident was investigated by Deputy Sheriff Ab Hunter and NMSP.
W Barnie Caton announces the appointment of Miss Janis Carver of Bonham Texas as the new secretary replacing Miss Ruth Meeks who served three years Miss Carver began duties Monday June 5 and is a 1950 Texas Tech graduate with a BA in secretarial studies Miss Meeks will return to college this fall to continue her studies
About 200 leading New Mexicans gathered at the School of Mines in Socorro to hear rain making lectures and discuss cloud seeding as a rainfall method. The meeting endorsed state funded studies and heard from Dr Workman and Langmuir on seeding with silver iodide.
George Washington Melton died June 1 1950, services held at 3 p m Friday at Tularosa Methodist Church. Rev F Curry presided with choir singing What a Friend We Have In Jesus and Rock of Ages. Burial in Tularosa cemetery. Survived by Nellie Lavina Taylor Melton wife two daughters Lois McDaniel and Lela Cory, three grandsons Jack Mack and Gordon, a granddaughter Pat Cory, four great grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
Center to close for an indefinite period starting Monday June 12 as manager Bill Waldrip oversees redecorating. Project aims include painting walls refinishing floors and completing an extended section of the ladies rest room with a new curtains option. The added room reduces lobby space and now opens from the ballroom.
From Holloman Air Force Base, two soldiers and their wives were injured in a two car collision on Highway 54, three and a half miles north of El Paso. S/Sgt. D. L. O Hara and Sgt Ist class Berends and their wives sustained multiple injuries and were taken to William Beaumont General Hospital. Cpl. B N Shourtte of Ft. Bliss was uninjured.
Pat Fowler held in Otero jail on drunken driving charge crashed through the east fence of Holloman Air Force Base around 7 30 am Tuesday. NMSP Patrolman Robert Badagher pursued him about 10 miles before Fowler was captured after the crash. Town Police Chief Joe Moffett aided by radio directing the chase as Military Police blocked all base exits. Fowler had recently bought a local juke box concession and allegedly siphoned gasoline from an Orogrande station.
Funeral services were held at 2 30 in the Tularosa Methodist church for George Bruce Stuart who died June 3 at his home five miles east of Ruidoso The Rev F Curry officiated with the Tularosa Methodist choir singing Rock of Ages and The Old Rugged Cross Pallbearers were W A Hart Roy Billing George McCarty B L Luck George Hightower and J F Tom He was born March 15 1878 in Newport Tennessee and married Maude Linam on March 5 1919 Surviving are his widow one brother C F Stuart of Alto four nephews and five nieces Burial was in the Tularosa cemetery Mullins O Dell had charge of arrangements
