Governor Robert D. Ray urges soil conservation during Soil and Water Conservation Week. He cites Iowa's reliance on agriculture, high erosion risk, and the state's unique use of funds for landowner conservation cost sharing, calling for continued collective effort to protect soil and improve Iowa for future generations.

For the ninth year the community response made the Annual Sioux Falls Senior Citizen Hobby and Talent Show a success. Volunteers exhibitors and entertainers created an enjoyable event and the media deserve thanks. We look forward to an even greater show in 1977 from the Hobby and Talent Committee led by Helen Sanders.
The Pleasant Hill Chapel association will hold its annual fall bazaar on Monday evening September 27 at 8 p.m. Main features include ventriloquist Beverly Wratny of Sioux City and Marvin Limoges of Elk Point. Donated articles will be auctioned by Bernard Bergdale of Alcester. lunch will follow.

Liz Anderson and Meta Bockelman called on John Wilken for his 77th birthday. Visitors and guests from multiple towns attended chapel services, sang, and shared messages. Residents received gifts, meals, and thanks were extended for church tickets and mutual support.
Marlene Seely of Sioux City and Robert Gries of Kingsley wed Sept 11 1976 at Union Creek Lutheran Church rural Akron. Rev David J Roy officiated at 4 pm with Donna Swanson Alcester on organ and Darla Wilkens Sioux Falls singing The Wedding Song and The Lords Prayer.
A stream of weekend and midweek guests appears across Hawarden and nearby towns. Mr. and Mrs. Collmann host and hostesses include Miss Emma Frerichs, Mrs. G. Moller, Mrs. Norman Friedrichs, and others visiting relatives in Akron, Sioux City, and Spencer. Wes Crow now resides at Mapes custodial home in Hawarden. Bonnie Liston and family share attendance at Karen Kaskie’s Hawarden wedding. Local trips bring guests from Arizona and Pipestone, Minnesota to Colimann and Moehrmann households.
Brule Creek Lutheran church in rural Elk Point hosts an 8 p.m. fall festival on Wednesday October 6 featuring Rev and Mrs Dale Anderson of Albert City Iowa with a vocal and instrumental program. Baked goods sale and free will offering follow a free lunch. Public invited.
Members of the Friendship and Service club started the new club year on Thursday Sept 9 at Shirley Nelson's home with Joy Dirks as co hostess. President Karen Willer welcomed members. 20 answered roll call. Dues $3.50 due Oct 1. 8th district convention Oct 7 at Storm Lake. reservations due Sept 28.
Ike DeSmidt of Humboldt carded his first hole in one on the 123 yard sixth hole a par three at the Humboldt country club. The feat was reported in the Humboldt Republican.
DLO and Dr. Charles Ridgley of San Antonio visited Akron relatives while their spouses stay stationed in Texas. A Sioux City couple welcomed a daughter on September 16, 1976, at St Luke’s Medical Center. Akron seniors met with 40 present and Rev Durwood Clauson spoke. Harley and Irene Goodroad mark 50 years with an October 3 open house. Bertha Frerichs and Charlie Jurgensen celebrated milestone anniversaries, with a large gathering and lunch recital of well-wishers in attendance.
S. R. Thomas Searls arrived home Friday after finishing navy boat training at the Great Lakes Training Center in Illinois. After a 14 day leave he will attend AMH school in Memphis Tennessee. He is a 1976 Akron Community High School graduate and the son of Mr and Mrs Dan Searls and grandson of Mrs Ena Sampson of Akron.
Julie Banks daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Banks rural route 1 Akron has enrolled as a freshman at Yankton College Yankton South Carolina She will major in business administration and accounting and management at the private four year liberal arts college Ms Banks is a graduate of Westfield Community High School
The Book and Thimble club held a September 14 meeting at Mrs. Oma Gassman’s home with thirteen members. New officers are Lorna Easton president Doris Brundeen vice president Penny Bryant secretary and Ruth Millard treasurer. Next meeting September 28 features Edith Baker. Turkey supplies update notes adequate to plentiful for the first time in nearly two years. New crop marketings and storage figures forecast small year‑to‑year gains and turkey supply up about 6 percent from the prior year.
Gene and Deb Knudsen, former Akron teachers now at Darmstadt American schools in Germany, send greetings to Akron friends. They left Akron last August for a two year teaching post. Gene reports a complete color photo darkroom on base and invites correspondence at Darmstadt American Schools AP O New York 09175.
A 1976 Akron Community High School graduate, Mark Ege, has enlisted in the U.S. Army. He began basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri after enlisting September 1. Upon completion, he will receive advanced training as a military policeman at Fort McClellan Alabama. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Fara of Akron and enlisted through the Sioux City recruiting station.
Mrs. Rudy Klave, 74, Akron, died September 20, 1976 after a lengthy illness. Services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday September 23 at Trinity Lutheran Church Akron with Rev. Durwood Clauson officiating. Burial follows in Riverside Cemetery under Schroeder Funeral Home directions. Survivors include Rudy, two sons Harold of Sioux City and Harlan of Akron, five grandchildren, and her former parents and siblings.
Fresh potatoes will be arriving in greater numbers in September as fall crop acreage climbs. Total acreage reaches about 1.15 million acres, 10 percent higher than 1975 and 1 percent above 1974. Growth comes from new land entering production, including some Pacific coast states.
