The Northwest Regional library system board of trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting on November 3 at 3 p.m. at the Whiting public library. The public is invited to attend.
The American Lutheran Church Women of the Sioux City conference held an officers seminar on Friday Oct 22 at Trinity Lutheran Church Akron. North half officers attended while the south half met Oct 26 at Soldier Lutheran Sioux City. Special 1977 emphasis was Reach Out Evangelical Outreach World Hunger and Prayer.
Members gathered October 14 at Dew Ann Elkin's home with Olive Boetger as co-hostess. Twenty two members answered roll call as Marge Dykstra, Jeanne Hinrichsen, Shirley Nelson and Karen Willer reported on the October 7 8th district Federated Women's clubs convention in Storm Lake. A January start $10 leadership course from Iowa State University extension service was announced and volunteers were asked to contact Marge Dykstra. A playground equipment need at the elementary school was discussed. Virginia Hartmann Barb Ostermyer Martie Krause and Linda Meyer presented a skit titled How to Kill a Club. Friendship and Service will meet October 28 at the city hall conference room with Kaye Erks as hostess. Julie Nason, secretary.
Army Spec. 4 Robert S. Miner 24 son of Mr and Mrs Robert E Miner Alcester recently met Secretary of the Army Martin R Hoffmann during Hoffmanns tour of the Southern European Task Force in Italy Miner a leader operator in combat support company 509th Infantry 1st battalion entered the army in 1972 and holds the Army Commendation Medal
Yh Mr and Mrs Roland Swanson and Lillian Adams arrived home after a six weeks visit to Sweden. They toured relatives and points of interest including Kings Castle. Mrs Mildred Klemme went home after a ten day visit with her daughter and son in law in Waverly Iowa and met her new grandson Ryan Joe born October 12. Martha Siebens and Marcia Mueller of Pompano Beach Fla returned Friday after visiting the Siebens and Gabel households and the Andrews Siebens home in Le Mars. Mrs Gladys Duncan of Sacramento and Mr and Mrs Clarence Staum visited Tuesday evening at the Staum home.
Linda Clarey daughter of Mr and Mrs Wm Clarey of Akron completed training at the Stewart school of hair styling Sioux City Enrolled Sept 9 1975 and has completed 2100 hours of training She studied all phases of hairstyling cosmetology permanent waving tinting makeup manicuring and shop management She will be licensed after state board examination.
Nursing home notes thank Rev Berreth of Adaville church for squash and tomatoes. October 18 marks first snow and rain. Visits abound from family and friends including Morel Bennett, the Knapps, Marie Larson’s 84th birthday with cake, Roy Postlewait and Beverly Hey, and many others delivering flowers, fruit, and good cheer. First Church service brought by Rev McHugh with singing. Several residents received visits, meals, and birthday tributes from local families and churches across Akron Hawarden Westfield Merrill Des Moines and Des Moines areas.
An Akron writer reports USC undergraduates show rising numbers of women 26 and over returning to college. Sue, 36, is a full time student balancing family and studies with 16 credit hours, part of 116 women in USC’s older cohort. The piece notes challenges, supports, counselor insights, and a call for institutional help to expand access for nontraditional students.
The Johnson Jr. 4-H club met October 18 at Ann Philips home with nine members present. Officers for 1977 were elected: Paige Philips president Ellen Jelken vice president Mary Kay Allen secretary Mary Hennigs treasurer Kay Miller historian, with Ann Philips and Lori Less in charge of music and recreation. Leaders discussed upcoming events and a Halloween party October 28 at Kissinger school.
The West-Port Farm Bureau ladies met at Suzanne Clark's home on October 20 with 11 members. They noted Plymouth county Farm Bureau ladies will run a booth at the Le Mars hospital bazaar on November 4 and 5. President Penny Harvey urged marking farm machinery and tools and placing cooled confetti in grain to identify stolen property.
