The Book and Thimble club celebrated its 70th anniversary on October 12 at Vivian McPherson's home with 15 members and three guests. Pat Scieszinsky from the Iowa Commission for the Blind presented Help for the Blind and showed The Blind Guys film. The next meeting, October 26, will be hosted by Bess Lias.
Liberty-Johnson Homemakers met at Mrs. Jelken’s home on Oct 12 with Delores Glover presiding and the creed recited. Members pledged and shared a historical roll call. Planned help for Floyd Valley hospital boutique on Nov 4 and 5 and forwarded a scrapbook to Living History Farm Des Moines and Plymouth County.
The Home Culture club gathered in the City Hall conference room on October 19. Evelyn Claesson led a review of Better Than Never by Dr. Joyce Brothers, sharing insights and discussion points.
Mr and Mrs Marion Morehead of Akron celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house October 31 from 2 to 5 pm at the Akron Golf Clubhouse. Married October 30 1926 in Elk Point by Reverend Will C Strong the couple’s children Jeri Swisher Harlan IA Juanita Sands Sioux City LeRoy Sands Sioux City Marvin Morehead Elk Point and Wilma Morehead Sioux City host along with five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Local citizens plan a fundraising drive to buy playground equipment for Akron School. Budget constraints limit high cost items, prompting a target to purchase a tornado slide and other needed gear for grade school students. Parents and residents are invited to visit the playground and contribute to this dedicated fund.
Music lovers can audition this week for the musical comedy Where's Charley at Ye Olde Opera House. Casting runs Oct 19 to 21 and Oct 24 from 7 to 9 pm, with 14 roles plus background chorus, musical director Mrs. Ralph Taylor, drama director Kristi Weber, choreography by Gina Roman, and a small stage orchestra.
Susan Kay Krause and Thomas Lee Lindstrand announce their May 28 1977 wedding at St John Evangelical Lutheran Church Akron. Parents are Darrell and Mrs Krause of Akron and Gordon and Mrs Lindstrand of Le Mars. Susan is a 1974 Akron high school graduate living on a local farm. Thomas, a 1973 Le Mars Community Schools graduate, farms and works part time at Le Mars Hatchery and Feed Inc.
Pembroke county residents are urged to register by Friday October 22 for a one day Living History farms trip on October 26. Annette Held says the $15 fee covers round trip bus transport, farm admission, and a catered lunch. Registration forms are at the Plymouth county extension office and by phone 546-7835. Akron residents are asked to save newspapers as the FFA collects them on the first and third Friday each month to aid energy conservation.
Mrs. Tom Day visited the Henry Collmann home and the G Moller and G Moehllmann households last week. Mrs. Fanny McKee spent days in Hudson South Carolina visiting Guy Bakker and hosted supper with Henry DeVries and Lizzie Anderson. Afternoon callers included Clay McKee Jr. and daughter from Gayville and Clay McKee of Hudson. Mr and Mrs A DeRaad conducted business calls in Le Mars. Mrs Clara Satthoff visited Akron and Henry Collmann, then joined a supper at Henry Collmann’s. Tuesday evening guests in F Hemmerrick’s home were Phil Sullivan and family from Hawarden. Nellie Burnight and Mrs Charles Hendricks attended P C O C club at Mrs Tentinger’s. Charles Hendricks and Darcy Fletcher hosted callers in Akron Monday night.
Glen Milbrodt of Akron survived the Indianapolis sinking in July 1945. He donated Richard Newcomb's Abandon Ship! to the local library, a book recounting the ship's loss, rescue, and the commander’s court martial. The donation was welcomed by the library board as a valuable addition to the collection.
Mr and Mrs Ford Hansen of Akron announce the engagement of their daughter Teresa to Joe Burdette son of Rev and Mrs Ralph Burdette of Gilmore City Iowa Teresa is a 1975 Akron Community school graduate and works at Akron Medical clinic His fiance is a 1974 Akron Community school graduate and attends Westmar college A spring wedding is planned.
Norwalk California residents Mr and Mrs Glen Breitbarth and Phoenix Arizona couple Mr and Mrs Vernon Breitbarth spent two weeks visiting in the homes of Mrs Fred Breitbarth and Mr and Mrs Randall Breitbarth. Norfolk Nebraska kin Mr and Mrs Gerald Schnier and Md Hattysville Maryland visitors joined in. The group later visited Wm Fleming at St Paul and traveled to Pendér Nebraska for a day with relatives.
SDSU Cateau Rangers select officers to serve the 1976 77 academic year. Jeff Vasgaard Centerville is commanding officer Swen Weinblom Akron is executive officer Jon Merkwan Tyndall is third sergeant and Ray Woolery Gary is fourth sergeant. The unit offers advanced ROTC cadets extra training and experience.
Henry Anderson and Minnie Johnson visited at the farm to see Harry. Residents hosted and welcomed guests including Mona Trimble, Margaret Phelps, Ed and Sophie Larson, and many Sioux City Akron and Remsen visitors. A movie, a 4 H club Columbus Day favor, a Kentucky Fried Chicken picnic at Stone Park, and a fine piano afternoon marked a lively week.
