Book and Thimble observe 70th anniversary

The Book and Thimble club celebrated its 70th anniversary on October 12 at Vivian McPherson's home with 15 members and three guests. Pat Scieszinsky from the Iowa Commission for the Blind presented Help for the Blind and showed The Blind Guys film. The next meeting, October 26, will be hosted by Bess Lias.

Akron Community School Playground Fund Drive Planned

Local citizens plan a fundraising drive to buy playground equipment for Akron School. Living History farms tour registration ends Friday

Pembroke county residents are urged to register by Friday October 22 for a one day Living History farms trip on October 26. Annette Held says the $15 fee covers round trip bus transport, farm admission, and a catered lunch. Registration forms are at the Plymouth county extension office and by phone 546-7835. Akron residents are asked to save newspapers as the FFA collects them on the first and third Friday each month to aid energy conservation.

Social visits and callers noted across several towns

Mrs. Tom Day visited the Henry Collmann home and the G Moller and G Moehllmann households last week. Mrs. Fanny McKee spent days in Hudson South Carolina visiting Guy Bakker and hosted supper with Henry DeVries and Lizzie Anderson. Afternoon callers included Clay McKee Jr. and daughter from Gayville and Clay McKee of Hudson. Mr and Mrs A DeRaad conducted business calls in Le Mars. Mrs Clara Satthoff visited Akron and Henry Collmann, then joined a supper at Henry Collmann’s. Tuesday evening guests in F Hemmerrick’s home were Phil Sullivan and family from Hawarden. Nellie Burnight and Mrs Charles Hendricks attended P C O C club at Mrs Tentinger’s. Charles Hendricks and Darcy Fletcher hosted callers in Akron Monday night.

Akron man survivor of Indianapolis sinking donates back to library

Glen Milbrodt of Akron survived the Indianapolis sinking in July 1945. He donated Richard Newcomb's Abandon Ship! to the local library, a book recounting the ship's loss, rescue, and the commander’s court martial. The donation was welcomed by the library board as a valuable addition to the collection.

Nursing home visitors and events draw residents to farm and park

Henry Anderson and Minnie Johnson visited at the farm to see Harry. Residents hosted and welcomed guests including Mona Trimble, Margaret Phelps, Ed and Sophie Larson, and many Sioux City Akron and Remsen visitors. A movie, a 4 H club Columbus Day favor, a Kentucky Fried Chicken picnic at Stone Park, and a fine piano afternoon marked a lively week.
