October heat breaks records in Iowa with football weather

Shorty Summer notes unprecedented October heat with air conditioning in use, wonders about a mild winter in 1975. Harvest continues as dry conditions raise fire risks. Attended a Storm Lake newspaper seminar, enjoyed networking, then a trip to see family and Jefferson friends. Back home, a broken type setter delayed work until GW Market expansion and basement excavation proceeded. A large rear tree was removed. The paper promotes a low rent housing survey with a deadline of October 27 for government funding eligibility.

Knapp to Speak at Akron Hospital Auxiliary Meet

Dr. Barry Knapp Sioux City pathologist and St Joseph hospital associate will be guest speaker at Akron hospital auxiliary annual meeting on October 27. Westfield native, son of Ivy and Mrs Knapp, married to Carolyn Lilly of Westfield.

Akron residents join visits and events at nursing home

Lorraine Huff of Akron visited Everett Campbell as two carloads of residents toured the hills along Broken Kettle Road. Nearby, Minnie Postlewait received a surprise birthday party with neighbors Mavis Bye highlighted. many locals including Lizzie Haage Alma Knecht Flora Cassens and others called on friends. Ed Nelson and Leona Dewey visited, Brule Creek Lutheran hosted a lunch and program, and residents shared coffee in the dining room after Marie Degen played piano. Visitors included families from Westfield Akron Le Mars Merrill and Elk Point with multiple social calls and exchanges of photos from Germany and Holland.

Mr and Mrs James Utesch celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a dance on September 26 at the Legion hall Brunsville hosted by their children Jim Kenny Diana Talbott George Linda Talbott and Chuck Randy at home. Kelley elected to Easter Seal Society house of delegates

James P. Kelley of Le Mars was elected by the Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Iowa to serve a two year term representing Plymouth Cherokee and Ida counties. Delegates elect board members and shape policy. election ratified at the October 11 annual meeting near Des Moines. Sioux City SCORE to Hold October Meeting

SCORE chapter in Sioux City announced by J Harold Sears district director that the group will meet Wednesday October 22 1975 at 10 am at the Elks Lodge 722 Douglas Sioux City. SCORE counselors will offer free management counseling and SBA program explanations with Elmer Damme inviting area businessmen to attend. Library story hour attracts thirty seven children

A lively group of 37 pre school and kindergarten children attended the first story hour at the public library last Friday. Norman the Doorman and Pancho are set to screen at 2 30 this Friday afternoon. A 15 volume Childcraft encyclopedia set has been added to the children's section to aid learning, storytelling, crafts, hobbies, and information gathering for children and parents.

West Region World Peace Seminar in Salt Lake City

Mrs. Roy participated in the West Region Seminar of the World Peace Seminar in Salt Lake City Utah held Thursday through Saturday. The Lutheran Women’s Cooperating Committee sponsored the event bringing together women from American Lutheran, Missouri Synod, and Lutheran Church in America. Theologians presented the Shalom theme and delegates engaged in value clarification for peace building with speakers including Pastor John E. Schramm Dr. Edward May and Dr. Aurelia T. Fule.

ROTC cadets train in field exercise at Oak Lake

Swen Weinblom leads more than 40 Army ROTC cadets from South Dakota State University in a first field training exercise of the year at Oak Lake. The Cateau Rangers practiced reconnaissance patrols small boat escape and evasion with teams ambushed and escaped. Team leaders included Weinblom Vasgaard Merkwan and Dingel with Bruce Cartner commanding.

Adult ballroom dancing begins Saturday night

The Akron Community school in cooperation with Western Iowa Tech offers adult ballroom dancing starting Saturday Oct 19 at 7 30 p.m. in the elementary school multi purpose room. Eight 24 hour sessions cover two step swing waltz and polka taught by Mr and Mrs Harry Kramer with Le Mars instructors at 12 dollars per person.

Veterans group meets at Cherokee VFW hall in Iowa

The 8th district WW and auxiliary, along with Veterans of World War I and auxiliary, hold their quarterly meeting at Cherokee VFW hall in Cherokee Iowa on Friday October 17. A noon polluck dinner requests guests bring table service and a covered dish. Commander George Bern opens at 1 pm with Albert Dallinger reporting on Kansas City national convention. Separate 1:30 pm meetings for bar racks and auxiliary, with coffee and refreshments to follow and a social hour.
