Shorty notes 26 days till Christmas and urges early shopping. Commercial club sponsors begin Saturday December 8 with Akron Money prizes and candy for kids on December 22. Postal delays and gas rationing threaten holiday mail and transit.

Special correspondence reports a long list of visitors and hosts across Chatsworth during Thanksgiving week. Names include Collmanns, Mollers, Hendricks, Lowells, Bultmans, Jacobsons, Hemmericks, DeRaads, Moehlmanns, Ludwigs, Wood, and Satthoff, with gatherings in Akron Alcester Lennox and nearby towns.
A note from John Huettmann expresses gratitude to friends relatives and St Luke's hospital staff for cards flowers visits prayers and support during recovery. Special thanks to Pastor Clauson and church members for prayers and to doctors and nurses for care.
A corn picker accident injured Duane Hebert and listed participants and kitchen helpers. Thanksgiving dinners featured many relatives across Akron and Westfield, with visits to Denver and Texas, plus a tornado note. Community events include church youth visits, a 25th wedding anniversary open house, Dora Bern birthday, and a Westfield basketball schedule and kitchen chat tips. A Veterans Administration project to overhaul its benefit system is noted.
A string of local visits and gatherings fills week with Thanksgiving relate events. Grace Small hosted Sunday at her Le Mars residence while families from Storm Lake Ames and St. Paul visited. Andrew Johnson longtime Akron area farmer died at Corpus Christi Hospital aged 81 after short illness. His wife Ruth to live with daughter in Goodland Kansas.
The Akron Student Loan Fund received 162 dollars from the family of Mrs Ethel Thorson in her memory. The gift supports Akron High School graduates pursuing further education. The fund, begun in 1953, assists thirty six students and is sponsored by Book and Thimble Rural Home Culture and Friendship and Service clubs.
Thanksgiving month brings a Take it Off Turkey and Dressing Contest to the Chicken Little Tops Club. Winners receive a canned ham. October queens Norma Beeck Carla Beeck Rev Kerr and Frances Rosenbaum noted. Eunice Klemme reports the humorous Menu for Minimizing and club laughs as part of the weekly updates.
A series of local club notices shows the Liberty-Johnson Homemakers Farm Bureau Club meeting at Mrs. Fred Lucken home with eleven members and one guest. Other group updates include Veterans of WWI Barracks 1507 Christmas gathering, Friendship and Service Club at Evelyn Claesson's, Sioux Viking Lodge No. 494 December meeting, and Norwegian Heritage program on Christmas customs led by Arlene Moltay and Mrs. Tendt.
The Shoulberg families express heartfelt gratitude for the kindness shown during their recent sorrow. They thank Pastor Roy Dr. Trotzig and the hospital staff, and extend thanks from Mrs H Shoulberg and the Berger and Shoulberg families plus grandchildren.
Jim Klauer was a man who smiled often though a soggy cigar blemished one side of his face. He abandoned the habit but backslid occasionally. He valued people, enjoyed conversation, made few enemies and many friends. The family thanks friends for kindness at his death.

The Iowa State Highway Commission extends the road condition report to snow and ice updates for winter and detour information during construction. The program, run by the Public Information Department with two automatic lines, answered over 1300 calls during a spring blizzard. Patrol reports are available November 15 to March 31 in listed cities including Atlantic and Des Moines with local numbers.
Ed Larson celebrated his 80th birthday with relatives visiting and sharing sandwiches cake and ice cream. Numerous neighbors and family from Westfield Kingsley Leeds Lawrence and Sioux City call on residents including Minnie Clark Lillian Swanson and Ed Blum while Helen Horton turns 77 with family gatherings and a birthday cake as grace notes mark a town home scene.
A compact retrospective spans December 1903 to 1963 entries. The column recalls births marriages and local events, noting blizzards store news telephones upgrades and a fire. It highlights multiple anniversaries and school sports results amid citywide happenings in Akron and surrounding areas.
