Community Health Week Proclaimed in Iowa for 1965

Governor Harold E. Hughes proclaims November 7 to 13 1965 as Community Health Week across Iowa. The notice urges allied health professions schools and civic groups to promote health services and planning to meet future needs and celebrate advances in medicine and disease control.

Iowa student enrollment rises 15.8 percent in 1965 report

The University of Iowa prepared a report for the Association of Iowa College Presidents showing 84,085 students enrolled across 61 Iowa colleges and universities in 1965, marking a 15.8 percent increase from 1964. Institutions include universities and junior colleges across the state.

Corn loan takeovers seen as smallest in 14 years

The report shows 1964 corn loan repayments totaling 116.4 million bushels nationally, with 214.8 million bushels placed under loan and a potential takeover under 100 million bushels, the lowest since 1951. Plymouth county reached 529,966 bushels repaid by August, with 1964 deliveries at 666,157 bushels, far below 1963 levels. Loans stored on farms resealed total 16.1 million bushels, down from 26.8 million a year earlier.

Drive to Help Retarded Children Campaign Planned

A Plymouth county drive to help mentally retarded children will run in early November. Local private citizens will form search parties to learn needs and suggest community help, raising funds to better integrate 3 percent of mentally retarded residents. Arlie A. Pierson, county chairman, says the educational effort aims to connect parents and classes with private citizens and organizations. Leaders include Le Mars Jayceettes Catherine Scholer and others in Remsen Merrill Kingsley Hinton Brunsville.

Fire losses in Iowa rise over forty percent year to date

The Iowa Loss Prevention Institute reports fire losses in the first eight months of the year rose more than 40 percent from 1964. Losses totaled 10,159,124 with 489 rural and 1,395 urban fires causing damage. There were 54 fire deaths so far, and Fire Prevention Week urged greater prevention efforts statewide.

Williams names Sharon Boetger as business manager and designates a junior editor. The next meeting will be held next Wednesday with Mr Easton from Josten Co. present to help choose the cover for this year’s annual.

Crop progress in northwestern section report

Corn harvest 40-50 percent complete and falling plow work active as soybean harvest finishes. Yields 20-30 bushels per acre for soybeans while corn combines and drying rise 25-50 percent from last year. Peak corn harvest expected around November five with about half of fall plowing done and farmhand demand strong.
