Akron students earn USD degrees at 94th commencement

The 94th commencement exercises at the University of South Dakota were held May 8 at Inman Field on campus. Akron students Dianne Marie Eskra earned an A.B. in English, Cayla Jean Klemme earned a B.S. in Education with high honors, Mary Lou Mahan earned a B.S. in Elementary Education, and Joseph Lovrien Trotzig earned a B.S. in Elementary Education.

Regional library board to meet at Carroll

The regular monthly meeting of the northwest regional library system board of trustees will be held Monday, May 17 at the Carroll public library, Carroll, Iowa. All interested persons are invited to attend.

Children Storytelling Workshop at Morningside Library

A children's storytelling workshop will be held Thursday May 20 at the Morningside branch of the Sioux City public library. Charles Ginter will conduct the session for librarians educators and parents from 9 30 a m to noon. Julie Banks Accepted at Briar Cliff College

Julie J. Banks has been accepted for admission to Briar Cliff College in Sioux City for the 1976 77 year. While in high school she earned the Presidential National Honor Society honor and was a cheerleader and basketball volleyball and softball team member. She is a senior at Westfield Community High School and daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph F Banks of rural Akron.

Akron TOPS 893 Meeting Notes May 6

Akron TOPS 893 met May 6 with ten members present. Secretary and treasurer reports approved. Weekly best loser lost 14 pounds. Charms and bracelets awarded for weight losses. Two new members joined in the last two weeks. Next meeting moved to Tuesday May 11 at 7 due to a Westfield composers contest. Kathy Bringman.

Home Culture club closes year with Plymouth visit

Members of the Home Culture club toured the Plymouth county work activity center on Tuesday morning May 11 then returned to Akron for a salad luncheon at Trinity Lutheran church parlors. The day concluded with a slide presentation of Iowa scenes.

Bicentennial recipes and comfort dishes from Howard SD

A collection of early 20th century recipes including rhubarb pie plant marmalade pineapple strawberry jam and baked potatoes with cheese. Also described are scrapple and hoghead bones as used in practical meals. The notes credit Mrs A Trotzig and Mrs E A Severin with entries from a 1913 cookbook.

Annual PEO Chapter JC May Breakfast at Wesley UMC

PEO Chapter JC held its annual May breakfast on Saturday May 1 at 9 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church. Officers and guests served 25 attendees. Fern Roy gave A program titled With Your Family Tree. Visitors from several towns attended, including Shirley Clark, Shelly Clark, Spencer, Edith Larson, Lois Jean Dawson, Yetta Olson, Carleen Shepers, and others. The next meeting is set for May 18 at Evelyn Claesson's home with a program on Through The Art Of Quilling by Jean Metzenthin of Alcester.

WWI Barracks and Auxiliary Meet Saturday in Le Mars

Plymouth county veterans of World War I Barracks 1507 and auxiliary hold a regular meeting at the Eagles building in Le Mars at 1:30 pm on Saturday May 15. Refreshments provided by the committee. Stop in to see stationery matches and playing cards offered as gifts for birthdays or holidays.

Henke and Gallentine vow in Council Bluffs ceremony

Elizabeth Henke and Robert C. Gallentine were married in an afternoon ceremony on May 18, 1976, at the home of Oliver C. Over Jr. in Council Bluffs. Parents are William J. Henke of Akron and Robert E. Gallentine of Omaha. attendants were Rebecca and Gerald Garges. The reception followed at the groom’s parents’ home. Both work in Omaha and will reside at 526 7th Ave Apt 3, Council Bluffs. Attendees included William J. Henke, Leonard Henke, Anthony Weidenfelter, and Leo Weidenfelter.

Akron band members at Worlds of Fun festival

Four Akron high school band members Roger Tucker Debbie Henke Roxanne Benda and Brenda Osterbuhr take a break during Worlds of Fun festival of bands at the Kansas City park. A record 32 bands with 2700 musicians from six midwestern states competed over two days while participants enjoyed unlimited rides shows and attractions.

Five Generations Gather for Le Mars Akron Reunion

A Carlson Sanow and Van Voorst family reunion in Le Mars and Akron brought five generations together. In photos, the great-great-grandmother Mrs Lora Carlson of Akron holds Christina Van Voorst as Lois Sanow of Le Mars stands nearby. Roy Carlson of Akron is identified as great grandfather. Ages span from 13 months to 89 years.

Local family visits mark Mother’s Day across towns

Berk Haan visited his grandparents in Beresford while his parents vacationed in the Bahamas. Mothers Day guests included Elizabeth Anderson as she nears her 100th birthday on July 13. A 31 Sunday dinner at Walter Hey’s featured many Nebraska and Iowa families. Mark Lewison returned from USC graduation to visit family before starting work with Arthur Andersen in Denver. Further Mother’s Day gatherings occurred in Minneapolis and Le Mars. A correction notes Elmer Jurgensen was omitted from the Edmund Blum plowing bee.

Area students receive degrees at Western Iowa Tech

Western Iowa Tech Community College will graduate 159 area students in exercises at West High School Auditorium on Thursday May 13 at 8 p.m. Associate in applied science graduates include 56 in accounting specialist data processing analyst electronic engineering technology mechanical engineering technology and police science technology. Diplomas total 33 with yearlong programs and 71 certificates in programs under a year. Troy Calhoun of Iowa Beef Processors will speak, Dr. Robert Kiser will welcome, Irvin Ludwig will present degrees, and Wayne Kyle will present graduates. The Rev A C Stephens will offer invocation and benediction. Local graduates include Jolene Lockwood Akron Marion Harris Westfield Karen Husmann Patrick Port.

Mother's Day Open House at Akron Nursing Home

Blanche Erickson and Anna Meyer among residents visited by family members from Akron Chatsworth Sioux City and San Antonio during a week at the Akron Nursing Home. Open House drew many families. activities included a piano performance Pam Stowe and a bingo for fruit prizes. Emrey Klemme celebrated 59th wedding anniversary on May 6 with cake and coffee. Helpers thanked the St Joseph ladies for Mother’s day favors.
