Shorty notes spring arrives with birds, gear readied for tilling, fishing, and gardening. Akron merchants ready spring shoppers while jeans shift from workwear to fashion. Tennis and school hoop thrillers draw readers, with a call for more sports news and local items to publish.
The Akron Register-Tribune is published weekly in Akron Iowa with manager F Shorty Hazel. It lists subscription rates of 6 dollars yearly or 4 dollars for six months in local counties and 7 dollars elsewhere. The paper is entered as second class mail matter starting September 26 1901.
Iowa sixth district resident accuses Congressman Berkley Bedell of double standards after he uses franked mail to announce county visits during Congress recess. Letter claims preference for taxpayer funded publicity over prior campaign stance on franking ethics and questions if elected official should use tax dollars to boost image.
Chatsworth News notes visits across town as Mrs Henry Collmann and granddaughter celebrate a birthday in Sioux City. Mrs Harley Small and Charles Leeds join Mr and Mrs Hendricks for dinner while Mrs Hendricks returns home. Johnny Van Wyhe and family visit Liston family. Jim Moller visits grandparents. Mrs Jacobs of Alcester visits Hemmerrick family. Jack Lake of Sioux City stops by Collmann home.
Akron alumni are urged to reserve for the April 12 meeting at 2:00 PM at the civic center. Send $5 per person to Lyle Jacobs with name address and graduation year. In 1906 Akron boasted nine Rheo 2 cylinder cars. Owners included J. C. Wade J. G. Gray Ed Cobb and Mr Way. To tackle hills around town occupants often got out and pushed the cars to the crest before continuing.
Mrs Ron Trude and Lavina Newman celebrated on Friday with a list of neighbors attending. Ed Nelson visited Anna Klemme for her 84th birthday and spoke with George Borchers in Le Mars Monday. Weekend visits included Jack Dailey at Ron Trude’s home and Ed Nelson with Milton Anderson. Ed Nelson also dined with Frank Marienau in Merrill. The Junior high area music contest at Morningside College yielded superior ratings for Zane Birkley Tim Smith Blair Smith John Friedenbach Lillian Gruenich and Vance Birkley. Westfield Community School presented a Pop Concert on March 14 1975 with multiple groups and acts. Music instructors are Brian Brost and Britton. Money talks but who can keep it long enough to start a conversation.
Mrs Steve Tonkin of Webster City hosted weekend goats in her parents home, Mrs Fréd Claesson Dr. Mildred Khemme spent last week with daughter and family in Waverly Iowa. Six members of Vesper chapter O E S Akron visited Loyal chapter O S B at Hawarden with Helen Snow and Mildred Kitearne as pro tem officers. Due to conflicts the Wesley United Methodist service conducted by Rainbow Girls on Palm Sunday is canceled until a later announced date.
Eastern Star will sponsor a soup dinner on Saturday April 5 with serving from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Masonic Temple in Akron. Cub Scouts host annual blue and gold banquet and pine wood derby on March 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Legion hall.
Lynn Waag, 17, of Akron, Ohio, has enlisted in the U S Air Force delayed enlistment program. A 1975 Akron Community High School graduate, she will enter active duty August 27 1975 and trains as a medical service specialist after basic at Lackland AFB. Her DEP time counts toward longevity pay raises, says recruiter Sgt Darrell Kroeplin.
The March 11 meeting of Book and Thimble Book and Thimbleclub was hosted by Mrs Helen Adams. Scripture from St Mark was given, roll call counted 15 members, and a musical quiz followed. Members discussed the county convention on March 17 in Hinton and the state convention in Des Moines on April 6. A trip to Hope Haven in Rock Valley is planned for April 22. Chile chairmen reported by topic, Caryl Siebens led program planning with Mr Gulsvig of Akron High providing vocal selections. Treasurer’s report passed, new member considered, meeting adjourned with dessert served. next meeting March 25 hosted by Penny Bryant.
Akron TOPS Club 893 met March 12 at 100 Reed Street with 14 members present. Secretary and treasurer reports were read and approved, a new member joined, weight recorder reports were given, two members tied as best losers with 2 percent weight loss, and a motion to adjourn was carried with Sue Croy closing the meeting. Judy Klemme served as secretary.
The Roving Gardeners club met at Cleo Tindall's home with 20 members present on March 10. Florence Rosenow led the business session and Martha Phillips presented a lesson on hanging plants that trail, droop and dangle.
Doris Campbell taught a special education class in Akron who spent about eight months of her final year compiling a simple town history. The students assembled a booklet with construction paper binding and distributed copies to the school and the city library.
James Hartmann, son of Mr and Mrs Rudy Hartmann, earned President's List honors for the fall semester at Sioux Empire College. Eligibility requires a 3.6 to 4.0 average, recognizing top academic achievement by honor students.
Mid-Sioux Opportunity invites funding and volunteers for a August 17 to 21 residential camp for handicapped youths aged 8 to 20 at Lutheran Lakeside Camp near Spirit Lake Iowa. The project, modeled on last year's Sioux City camp, seeks $28 per participant and extra counselors to broaden access and services. Bride elect Kathy M. Puffer of Hitchcock South Dakota will marry Mahlon Dirks son of Elk Point residents. Puffer a SDSU nutrition and food science dietetics student and Dirks a SDSU junior majoring in political science and social studies. A May 10 ceremony is planned in Hitchcock.
Mr and Mrs Fay Hendricks of Alcester announce the engagement of their daughter Katherine Louise to Timothy Allan Winquist son of Mr and Mrs Elwood Winquist of Akron Katherine is a senior at Alcester high school and Timothy is presently farming
Floyd Valley hospital will again sponsor a four week spring session of free prenatal classes taught by Luella Taylor RN and hospital obstetrical staff. Sessions run four consecutive Wednesdays at 7 30 p.m. in the first floor assembly room with expectant fathers invited. An October class is planned. volunteers are sought to drive elderly and disabled clients, call 568-2721 or 568-2274 to help.
Mr and Mrs Robert Philips of Tomahawk Wisconsin will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday March 30 with an open house at Ada ville United Methodist church Merrill from 2 to 4 30 pm. The couple are former residents. He is a son of Elmer Philips and her mother is Bessie Buryanek.
Sioux City SCORE chapter will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday March 26 at 10 00 a m at the Elks Lodge building 722 Douglas Sioux City. J Harold Sears district director SBA Des Moines Iowa and SCORE counselors will be available for interviews to discuss SBA programs and free management counseling for area small businessmen. Stanley Jacobs chapter chairman invites interested businessmen to attend.
Andrea Simonetti, born August 31 1890 in Spitz herdorf near Hamburg, Germany, emigrated to America at age 35 after her father feared Hitler. She married a farmer in Manning Iowa and spent years as a homemaker for local priests in Akron West Bend and Auburn. Her life highlights include three trips to Germany, love of visiting television and bingo, and membership at St Patrick’s Church in Akron. Numerous social visits and community events mark her long life with family and neighbors across Iowa.
