Congregational Ladies' Aid Society Meeting and Picnics

Special correspondence notes the Congregational Ladies' Aid Society meeting on July 1 at 2 00 pm in the church with hostesses Bessie Buryanek and Elsie Nelson and program on Protestantism's appeal to Spanish Americans led by Helen Lias and Evelyn Banks. It also recounts Fathers' Day picnics at Roy Bliss and Lowell Morehead residences with several families attending and Camp plans to raise funds.

Let Us Learn Club Meeting at Russell Abraham Home

The Let Us Learn Club met on Tuesday in June at the Russell Abraham home with co hostesses Mrs Russell Abraham and Mrs Delmar Abraham. Fourteen members attended. A Creed opening followed by outdoor cookery hints during roll call. Plans were made for a picnic at Akron Park on Sunday July 11 with food demonstrations enjoyed by all.

Training Grants Fund Special Education Programs

U S Office of Education provides over 4.7 million dollars for 1965 66 to 152 colleges and universities to train teachers of mentally retarded children. In Iowa Drake University State College of Iowa and State University of Iowa participate. Grants fund fellowships and program development plus 146000 for supervisors across nine colleges and universities. Names of Iowa recipients include Robert Gelhart Thomas Fangman Munro Shintani R David Nelson Cecil E Leonard with future summer traineeships planned.

Survey of College Student Characteristics Reveals Career Plans

Educational Testing Service surveyed 13 000 freshmen at 23 colleges finding six in ten intend graduate or professional school, one in four seek a doctoral degree, and nine in ten chose a major. Women foresee marriage and family emphasize while many plan careers in engineering medicine education or business.

Ford Fund grants $2000 to Iowa college foundation

The Ford Motor Company Fund announced a $2000 grant to the Iowa College Foundation. Benson Ford presented the check to Wayne Liljegren, executive director of the foundation, via E. J. Pritchard, chair of Ford’s Des Moines community relations committee. The Iowa list includes Briar Cliff, Buena Vista, Central, Clarke, Cornell, Graceland, Grinnell, Iowa Wesleyan, Loras, Luther, Marycrest, Morningside, Mount Mercy, Northwestern, Parsons, Simpson, University of Dubuque, Wartburg and others. The grant is part of 39 awards totaling $87,500 nationwide to educational associations.

Tribute Through The Red Cross Memorial Day Feature

Memorial Day honor extends to American Red Cross service of aid counsel and finance. One thousand two hundred field directors, about a quarter overseas, supported 80 000 servicemen monthly and 118 000 veterans and families through military and Veteran Affairs channels. Red Cross funded 11.6 million in financial aid and 401 thousand to veterans dependents, plus claims help. Overseas clubs and 50 young women in Korea, and 505 000 communications last year between posts and households. Red Cross expenditures near 40 percent of a near 100 million dollar budget for armed forces welfare remains planned for 1965. Tommy DeWitt of Worthington Maine reels an 18 pound northern pike at Big Spirit Lake.

Soil Survey Teams Map Henry to Port land Townships

SCS soil scientists mapped Henry Township this spring and began Port land Township work in Plymouth County as part of a nationwide survey. John Vorster of Sioux City says the project partners with agricultural colleges and agencies to map all U.S. land. Soil reviews in counties, including Woodbury and Union, ensure consistent naming and classification across regions.
