Memorial Day Visits and Family Gatherings Across Iowa

Visitors to the Wesley Heeren home included Mr and Mrs Wayne Waterman and baby from Sioux City for Memorial Day. Robert Wreugdenhil spent the week at Mrs Roy Anderson. The Sykes family and others enjoyed a Memorial Day picnic. Wayne Waterman and others were dinner guests at Robert Knockson's Akron home. Mrs Ericson Mrs Waterman visited Mrs Olof Hriegen. Elmer Hultgren Jett and family left for Iowa City to visit Earl at the State University and planned Fort Dodge relatives. Earl will return for summer.

Banks to Close Early Under Wage Hour Bill

The Federal Government rules that state and national banks are in inter state commerce and subject to the Wage Hour Bill. Banks in Plymouth County will close at 3 PM starting June 1 1939 with Saturday closing at noon, to meet a 44 hour work week.

Awards for Housewives of Iowa at State Fair

Iowa housewives will win state championships in hundreds of classes for cooking canning pickling sewing and other home arts at the Iowa State Fair August 23 to September 1. Officials announced the final list of women’s prizes noting the cooking canning and baking contests previously eliminated have been restored this year to honor the Territorial Centennial.

Iowa 1939 State Fair Hears Large Competition Lineup

The 1939 exposition reopens with 218 culinary classes and 257 sewing and crafts contests offering substantial cash prizes. Iowa women may win 1188 in culinary and related arts while textile awards total 1106. Town’s crochet champion advances to the National Crocheting Contest in New York. A 2656 page premium list is available from the State Fair secretary in Des Moines.
