United States Senate candidate L. J. Dickinson warned Des Moines audiences that sprawling government spending and a rising public debt threaten the nation. He cited $24 billion in three years and a projected $84 billion debt by summer, urging pace to balance the budget and return relief to state and local agencies while protecting American farmers with tariffs and prudent farm financing.
Threshing is widespread with winter wheat averaging about thirty bushels to the acre and rye and barley showing fair yields. A funeral for Mrs. Ernest Attrill will be held Thursday in Ak r on. Numerous local visits occur including Mrs. Rose Burke and sister in Midland and Miss Anne Tracy’s return from visits in Akron and Sioux Falls. Early week social events include Ladies Aid at the Congregational church and upcoming meetings. Several locals travel to Sioux City, Omaha, and Portland in family visits. A drought-stricken Kansas trip prompts Albert Buckingham to return home. Westfield wins a Sunday ball game at Hub City 2 to 1. Upcoming games include Westfield vs Alvord. Various relatives visit, with births and deaths noted for the community.
Union Creek church holds services next Sunday at 8 PM. Mission Band gathers Tuesday afternoon at Luther Hall. Luther League meets Tuesday. Annual Union Creek picnic set for Thursday August 6 on church grounds. Ruth Rae Stoutenbury visiting Lois Anderson for a week. John Ericson and Selma Lillequist visited Wm Ericson home Tuesday evening. Dorothy Pope of Shell Lake Wis visiting Miriam Ericson this week.
Special correspondence notes Mr and Mrs Melvin Hansen and sons visiting Sioux City Tuesday. About thirty relatives and friends met at Richard Ball home Sunday to play kitten ball followed by lunch. Ole Olsen visited Walter Heys Sunday. Ivan Waterbury of near Akron spent Sunday with Eddie Lewison. Vernon Fickbohm visited Howard Lewison. Curtis Hansen stays with his grandparents Alfred and Mrs Miller for a few days.
Excessive heat and grasshoppers are damaging crops in the Milnerville area. W B Milner lost all belongings in a July 4 fire that destroyed the Gamberg house at Hermosa SD. Priscilla and Audrey Milner visited Sioux City relatives and returned home Tuesday night. Marjorie Knapp left to visit a roommate in Roland Town. Mr and Mrs Amos Brown and others returned to Verndale MN. J P DeRocher and Emner Mook report cattle losses from-age crop poisoning. Myron Taylor underwent appendicitis surgery at St Josephs Sioux City, feared pneumonia early on. Mrs Owen Taylor stayed in Sioux City by Myrons bedside, returning later. Willer and Knapp sold fat cattle in Sioux City market. Dorcas Knapp of Westfield visited the W R Knapp home and returned Sunday with the Knapp family. Mavis Fry visiting Shirley joined a swimming party with the Fry family. William Hickey and son James of Yankton SD visited the Alfred Fry home. Hickey longtime deputy sheriff. Banks family mumps continue to trouble them. Mr and Mrs C P Knapp accompanied by others.
