Severe drought endangers Akron water supply as wells drop from 20 30 feet in spring to 4 5 feet now. City officials urge voluntary conservation and only essential use, warning rationing may be enforced if levels fall further. Credits note centennial issue coverage by Jerry Smith and Fran Miller.
Akron Iowa community notes list events for July including Chicken Little and group meetings from July 8 to July 15. It also notes a 25th wedding anniversary open house for Mr and Mrs Curtis Sangstad of Alcester at Roseni Lutheran church in rural Beresford on Sunday July 11 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Laurie Tindall of Akron has been accepted for enrollment at Westmar College in Le Mars. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Adam Tindall rural route 1 Akron and a 1976 graduate of Akron Community High School. Westmar operates a 4-1-4 year with two semesters and a January interim. The college enrolls 704 students from 29 states and four foreign countries and was founded in 1890 with ties to the United Methodist Church.
PEO Chapter 1C met at Hazel Maynard home with Mildred Steel co host. Cleo Tindall reported on Drake University meetings attended at the state convention. The theme Belonging Brings Happiness. Proceeds from luncheons benefit Cottey College Nevada Missouri the International Peach scholarship fund and Continuing Education. State officers installed. Local meetings resume Tuesday October 4.
Nursing home activity and social updates list numerous visitors from Westfield Akron Sioux City and Le Mars to see residents such as Gertrude Ross Minnie Postlewait Helen Horton and Lizzie Tindall. An art class produced sunset watercolors and a plant container project.
Former students, teachers, friends and families are invited to the West Union District 33 school picnic and reunion on Sunday July 25 at Akron city park. A potluck dinner starts at 12 30 p.m. Bring cool drinks, coffee provided, photos and mementos welcome, and softball gloves optional. The district was organized September 14 1874 in Union County Dakota Territory and operated until 1969.
Locals Mr and Mrs John Swisher of Harlan spent the 4th of July weekend in the home of Mrs Swisher s parents Mr and Mrs Marion Morehead. Marie Bauerly spent the 4th weekend with her daughter and family Mr and Mrs Ronald Dreas at South Sioux City Nebr.
An all day meeting of the Johnson Jr Homemakers 4 H club was held at Kay and Patty Millers on June 21 1976. Roll call had 12 members present no visitors. Discussion covered local Achievement Day set for July 19 at 1 30 at Adaville church and plans for tour dates July 12 13 or 14 to visit a furniture shop. Demonstrations included dusting Home away from Home and the History of the Ruble store arranging furniture and pledge led by Paige Philips. Lunch was served by Mrs Miller and projects continued in the afternoon. Meeting adjourned.
A large Chatsworth crowd marked the town bicentennial with a 3 p.m. parade of about 45 units and a postparade potluck featuring hot dogs and refreshments. Evening events included donkeys and a donkey softball game, with Elwood Younkin winning a quarter beef and Mrs. Jerry Van Wyhe claiming a flag Afghan.
Karen Brodie and Michael Kirk Andrew married June 12 1976 in St Patrick’s Akron. Officiating Rev Donald Kirk from St Norbert Abbey presided at a 2 pm mass. Attendants wore orange and olive gowns with green fugi mums. Musician organist Saienga and Roberta Brodie performed. Bride carried white roses and ivy rosary. Post ceremony reception, multi-state guests, honeymoon planned for August.
July brings a decision month for school board members and hopeful candidates. Elections are September 14 with nominating petitions due August 5. Terms expiring this fall force current appointees to choose re election or depart. The job grows harder with teacher bargaining, demanding three year terms and long hours. Citizens should consider supporting incumbents and identifying strong replacements.
