The Akron Register Tribune announces ownership and publishing details for GOOD NEWS INC. Owners and publishers are listed with manager Shorty Hazel. It notes weekly Thursday publication in Akron Iowa and subscription rates by region including Plymouth Sioux Woodbury counties and Union County South Dakota with a $6 yearly rate and $7 elsewhere.
Chatsworth area residents hosted and visited with relatives and neighbors over a series of days. The many names include Collmanns, Johnsons, Moller, McKee, DeVries, VanderMie, Boc kelman, Satthoff, Bakker, Lake, and Klave. Activities ranged from family gatherings in G Moller and H Collmann homes to open houses in Hudson and visits to Sioux City, Hawarden, and Ireton. The Hawarden ball team beat Chatsworth Rats 27 to 18 in a Wednesday game.
Akron TOPS 898 met with co leader Theresa Carlson conducting the meeting. Secretary and treasurer reports were read and approved. Two adult best losers for the week each lost 9.75 pounds. By laws were reviewed and additions made after discussion and vote. Members vowed to lose at least one pound next week or face a penalty. A visitor was welcomed. Meeting adjourned. Local notices list weekly meetings from Immanuel LCW St Johns Hope circle and Adaville UMW on July 3 to Akron city council July 7 and other groups. Independence Day holiday closings on July 4. Future dates include Jr 4-H Achievers Senior Citizens Border Belles Catholic Daughters and CRD United Methodist Women meetings through July 9.
Akron student William Beckman will join Iowa State University as a freshman in the College of Engineering this September. He attended a two day orientation with tests, counselor meetings, and class planning while staying in university residence halls and touring departments to become familiar with classrooms and labs.
On June 6, 1975 Marcia M. Brandt of Westfield Iowa received the Associate in Arts Degree from Sioux Empire College in Hawarden Iowa. She was one of 56 students to earn the degree.
A series of Lamaze classes for expectant parents starts Thursday, July 10 at 8:00 p.m. in the Gold Room, St. Joseph Mercy capital, Sioux City. Sponsored by Siouxland Childbirth Education, the two hour sessions run seven lessons with demonstrations, relaxation training, movies, and hospital tours to ease fear and prepare couples for labor. Cyrus Knapp and his mother Mrs. C. P. Knapp recently returned from a Europe tour visiting Belgium Holland Germany Luxembourg France and England and relatives at several points. En route home they called on Roger Knapp in Washington D C Chas Roland Fletcher of Des Plaines Ill and Ruth Ann Mackey and Richard Asmussen family of Elmhurst Ill. They also visited Akron Elk Point and Sioux City. Nearby John Winquist hosted grandniece and husband Willem Pieneman from Amsterdam and sister Margaret Carlson from Kemare N D. Mrs John C Popken Akron learned of the sudden death of sister Mabel Reinke Vernon Center Minn funeral services held there. Survivors include two sisters Mrs Wm Ludwig Le Mars and Mrs Henry Weyen Beresford S D and brother Henry Marienau Hawarden.
The Alcon CRD Challengers gathered in the city park at 1:00 on June 25 with 18 attendees. They visited their adopted grandparents, staged a puppet show, shared lunch, and played a human scavenger hunt. Officers elected were Mayor Kim Krohn, Treasurer Brian Osterbuhr, and City Clerk Kim Waterbury. A follow up cleanup is planned at the triangle on July 2 at 1:00.
Chantel C. Fowler, longtime Akron educator and former junior high principal, retires as Clinton County superintendent of schools on June 30 after 49 years in teaching and administration. His career spanned rural Nebraska schools, Akron, Des Moines, Bayard, Wheatland, and culminating in Clinton County. The Fowler-Bruce Developmental School honors his service with the renaming of the center.
Keith Less of Akron attended Iowa State University orientation sessions for incoming freshmen in the college of agriculture. The two day program featured counselor guidance, class scheduling, residence hall meals, department tours, and housing and church orientation programs on and off campus.
Clarence Wentland, 75, of Victor sold his grocery store after 564 years in the same location. He said if he could do it again he would not work so many hours and that a man must be off his rocker to work for 50 years without a vacation.
The County 4-H Dress Revue invites girls and boys to enter by July 7 1975. Entrants must include girls enrolled in the clothing project. Two classes exist constructed garments and selected garments. A state bound participant will be chosen from each category. A July 7 meeting at 7 30 pm in the extension office covers revue information and modeling tips. Judging occurs July 21 at 9:00 am in the extension office.
Rev. John Collnér of Corvallis Oregon will be seen on the Light Unto My Feet program on KMEG Channel 14 Sioux City Sunday July 6 at 9 00 a m He conducts an ecumenical world food and population study featuring members from three churches The segment promises insight into a globally important issue.
Airman Rose Loutsch, daughter of Ronald and Mrs. Loutsch of Westfield Iowa, graduated at Lackland AFB Texas from basic training. She studied the Air Force mission and received human relations instruction. She will return to her ANG unit at Sergeant Bluff Iowa for on the job training as a supply specialist. She is a 1972 Westfield Community High School graduate who attended Western Iowa Technical College.
Marta Trotzig of Akron is among 1,603 University of Iowa students named to the College of Liberal Arts dean's list for the second semester of 1974-75. Eligible students completed at least 12 graded hours with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Dean Dewey B. Stuit lauded the honorees for distinguishing themselves.
The Union County Farm Bureau and Young Farmers and Ranchers sponsored a Talent Corkest and Flower Show at Alcester South Carolina on Monday June 23. Winners include Kersten Johnson reading in the 8 to 12 group Teresa Staum flute solo Joelle Leafstedt piano solo for 13 to 17. Flower Show top placements list Kay Staum Teresa Staum Ada Ballinger and others with centerpieces mixed bouquets and houseplants awarded.
The Rohlfs family picnic occurred Sunday June 22 in Hawarden city park. Attendees included John Rohlfs and many relatives from Iowa South Dakota Nebraska and Texas spanning Le Mars Ireton Randolph Randolph and Hinton with names such as Ben Rohlken Howard Benson Alvin Rohlfs Lamont Richard Rohlfs and Jim Rohlfs among others.
About 120 relatives attended the Renken family reunion at Le Mars Municipal Park on Sunday June 22. Akron attendees included Earl Oetken and family, Warold Voss and family, Delmar Gerrietts, Herman Renken and family, Jim Buryanek and relatives, and Don Renken of Sioux City. A noon pot luck followed by visiting in the afternoon. During the past year there were eight births, one death and two weddings.
Harold Munkel discovered a large Wells Fargo Express sign face down in dirt beneath the floor of an old Lime Springs house being razed. The sign was described as remarkably good condition despite age.
Westfield, Akron, Le Mars and Sioux City residents visit the nursing home and attend Alumni events. The CBD kids host puppet shows and adopt a grandparent program. Numerous named visitors drop in, including Postlewaits, Haages, Hartmanns, Tindalls, and others, with a July bulletin board and assorted cookies and gatherings.
