Shorty notes warm response to honoring a senior citizen and announces two honorees this month. He requests more stories of seniors, plans to cover a local industrial meeting, praises club bulletin boards at nursing homes, watches city shed demolition, and looks forward to a new fire station while commenting on rising living costs.
Akron Iowa based paper Good News Inc owners and publishers list Shorty Hazel as manager. It declares weekly publication every Thursday in Plymouth Sioux and Woodbury counties and Union County South Dakota rates five dollars per year six months two fifty. It notes second class mail matter entry date September 26 1901 and subscription rates for local and broader regions.
Mr George Moehlmann and daughter Eilene visited Mrs Lena Schuester in Hawarden last Monday afternoon. Mrs Edyth Packard and Miss Eilene Moehlmann called on business in Sioux Center last Wednesday. Mrs Jack Robb of Ann Arbor and her mother Mrs Lena Koppert of Le Mars visited the Moehlmanns. Several luncheon and visit events occurred around Hawarden and nearby towns with many relatives and neighbors, including Frerichs Akron, Collins Collmanns, and the Hemmericks visiting friends and family in multiple homes.
Henry D. Plueger 76 of Akron died January 28 after a long illness. Funeral services were January 30 at St. John's Lutheran Church Preston Township with burial in the church cemetery. He was born February 10, 1897 in Sioux County and married Alma Borchers on November 28, 1918 in Le Mars. He farmed in Akron Ireton and Craig until retiring in 1962. Survivors: widow Alma, two daughters Arlene Horton Hawarden and Fern Horton Pipestone, Minn., a son Darrell Akron, 17 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two sisters Alice Klemme Brunsville and Walter Gerdes Le Mars, and three brothers Albert California John Sioux City Charlie Brunsville.
Mary Baer of Jefferson visits aunt Margaret Krenz as families from Hawarden Pipestone Sioux Falls and Westfield stop by the Home North and East wings. Plymouth Presbyterian circle hosts with sand wiches coffee and bingo prizes. Many relatives from Westfield Sutherland Spink Sheldon Marcus Merrill Mitchell Le Mars and Spencer visit residents. Mild weather and improving flu and cold cases noted.
Westfield Community High School held homecoming events with Liz Robak and Gary Buryanek crowned as king and queen. The Beggars Orchestra played for the dance. The Westfield A Team lost to Hudson while the B Team defeated them 33 to 11. The Girls Basketball Team lost 60 to 50 to Hull Western Christian, with another game slated for February 1 on home court. A benefit ham and meat loaf dinner for the girls team is planned February 8 from 5 to 8 pm, adults $1.50, children under 12 75 cents.
Harry Jager, 71, Hawarden, died January 22 in a Hawarden hospital. Services January 25 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. O. F. Pittack officiating. Burial at Grace Hill Cemetery. Born August 12, 1902, near Sioux Center. Married Willa Richardson September 10, 1923, in Orange City. lived in Hawarden 50 years. Survived by wife, five sons, five daughters, two brothers, three sisters, 24 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He worked 43 years as crane operator for L. G. Everist Co. and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Funeral directed by Dow Funeral Home.
The Border Bell 4-H club met January 16 at the Willers home with Lavonne Willer calling the session to order at 7 30. New officers Anita Henrich president Debbie Kroksh secretary Jeanne Pridie treasurer were installed. 16 members attended with roll call on Italy. Plans for meals to shut ins in Akron and a February swimming party were discussed. Demonstrations covered lasagna macaroni spaghetti and noodles. Guests brought lunch served by the hostesses and their mother Jeannette Finzen reported.
Colleen Welch daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Welch of Akron wed Scott Schenkelberg son of Mr and Mrs Al Schenkelberg of Le Mars in a Dec 29 ceremony at St Patrick Catholic Church Akron with a double ring mass. The bride wore white velvet with pearl lace details and a chapel train. Aimee Beth Welch served as maid of honor and a large bridal party attended in red velvet. After mass the reception for 275 guests was at the parish hall. The couple plans to live at 24 Elm Armel Acres Le Mars after a trip to Arkansas.
The Union County Livestock Feeders Directors met at the Village Bowl in Alcester on January 24 1974 to plan the 74 program. Officers elected were Jerry Birgen president Dennis Treiber vice president Darmon Staum treasurer and Louie DeSmet secretary. Directors include Craig Eidem Russell Hanson Benny Quam Max Vreugdenhil Jerry Kratochvil and Jim Leafstedt. Reports were given by Birgen and Eidem on meetings at IBP and Sioux Center attended as representatives.

The Akron Assembly of the Order of Rainbow for Girls held a large installation at the Masonic Temple on Sunday afternoon January 13. Cheryl Tentinger was named Worthy Advisor with a slate including Mary Snow as Associate Advisor and Nancy Wales as Charity. The ceremony featured musical numbers by Nancy Wales and Janelle Dirks and speeches by Rainbow leaders. Installing officers included Cindy Tucker as Worthy Advisor and Irene Harris as Installing Marshall. Potential members ages twelve to eighteen are invited. six new girls will be initiated January 27.
Thank you to relatives and friends for cards gifts visits and calls during my St Luke’s hospital confinement. Special thanks to Pastor Roy for visits and prayers. All was greatly appreciated.
Roxanne Jurgensen known as Roxy receives praise for playing baritone in the stage concert marching and pep bands and for singing in chorus. She participates in Apollo Music Festival serves on band council and helps in the music department while also leading church choir and Luther League. Next week a recital by younger bands and a Winter Band Concert on March 8 are planned along with tonight’s Northwest Iowa Music Festival in Cherokee with tickets at 1.50.

The West Port Farm Bureau women gathered at Marlene Pridie’s home with ten members present. Roll call offered songs or resolutions. Chair Carol Kroksh named committees for the upcoming pot luck supper. Gene Held will guest and show slides of the Fair. The group reviewed new program books and featured a music segment with all participants.
