Mrs Shirley Lowell was a supper guest in the Chas Hendricks home. G Moller and family hosted visitors from Wisconsin and Sioux City. Hawarden and Akron residents called on Moehlmann and Collmann households. Various family visits, hospital stays, and a Golden wedding anniversary are noted with several guests from Leeds and California.
Akron couple Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kenny announce the engagement of Kath leen Ellen Kenny to Robert Dennis Rea of Springfield Ohio. Kathleen is a University of Iowa nursing graduate and flight nurse at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital in Denver. Donnie Rea attended Miami University of Ohio and Mesa Junior College and works as a ski patrolman at Keystone in Colorado. An August wedding is planned.
The Henry D. Plueger family express heartfelt thanks for comforting sympathy and help after their loss. They extend special gratitude to Rev. Sandvik for visits and prayers, Akron Hospital nurses and staff, Dr. Trotzig, and all who sent flowers memorials cards and pantry supplies.
A flurry of visitors from Sioux City Brunsville Hawarden and Westfield called on residents at the Home. Birthday songs and small gatherings marked the month with notes of thanks from Mrs Guy Minor for two lap robes. Ground Hog's Day observation noted six more weeks of winter.
Dr. Ervin Kjenaas a board certified psychiatrist joins the Plains area mental health center in Le Mars offering Monday evening appointments starting Feb 4 He comes from Cherokee Mental Health Institute where he has served 11 years and will also provide weekly time at the Northwest Iowa mental health center in Spencer Appointments can be made by calling Le Mars at 546-4624.
Frank T. Rolfes, 68, longtime Akron area farmer, died January 29, 1974 in a Sioux City hospital after a three year illness. Born November 19, 1905 in Le Mars, he married Ida Dreckman in 1926. The couple farmed near Le Mars and Merrill before moving to Akron in 1951. Survived by six sons Virgil, C J, Robert, LeRoy, Eugene, Stanley. four daughters Ruth Phelps, Paula Winker, Clarice Wilken, Patricia Christensen. one sister, 27 grandchildren, five great grandchildren. Preceded by two brothers, three sisters, and two sons Isidore and Daniel.
Local visitors from Indiana and Iowa join Westfield families for weekend gatherings. The girls basketball team wins twice 85 80 and 75 43 previewing a February 7 game against Sioux City East. Boys team hosts Jefferson South Dakota February 9 with more games listed February 12 and a February 14 school board meeting.
The Iowa Association for Retarded Children sponsors a 500 word essay contest for grades 7 through 12 with a March 5 deadline. Local winners advance to the state level for cash bonds and a trip to the convention in June. Topics include mental retardation as a universal problem and community awareness.
Mr and Mrs Clyde McKee Jr of Akron announce the engagement of their daughter Pamela Jean to Kerwyn McInnis son of Mr and Mrs Bruce McInnis of Hawarden Iowa A February wedding is planned
The Liberty-Johnson Homemakers club meets February 12 at Mrs. Clark Tindall residence. Vesper Chapter 61 of the Order of Eastern Star holds a regular meeting February 11 at 8 00 with Past and Present Marthas honored. A Valentine luncheon and program is February 13 at 1 00 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron with tickets 1 25 at the door and a nursery babysitter available.
The library’s new book list covers diverse titles from The Whole Works by Krueger to The Sky and Tomorrow by Duncan Thomas and The Memory of Old Jack by Berry. It notes award links, themes of migration, history, family, and growth, with added Junior and Young Adult selections like Summers of My German Soldiers and Carrie’s War for varied readers.
Mr and Mrs Lawrence Muth of Akron announce the engagement of their daughter Jo Ann to James Moses of Yankton South Dakota James is the son of Mr and Mrs Orville Moses of Yankton Jo Ann is a senior at Mount Marty College in Yankton Her fiance is employed in the Yankton school system.
A weekly feature spotlights Kim Brod known as Baby-Brod. She plans on drums this season after a basketball accident limited her trombone playing. Kim stays active in student council pep club FHA and declam, excels in acting athletics and music, and is set for events like the Cherokee NW Iowa Band Concert and upcoming festival productions.
