In Akron, Dutch Elm disease has killed hundreds of elms, sparking letters about loss and hope. A Little Pine Tree recounts being planted five years ago with a friend, only to witness their sudden uprooting by a yard intruder, leaving Ruth and Bill Mitchell saddened and wary of future plantings.
Akron Register-Tribune lists club meetings from January 27 through February 8 including Friendship and Service, YoMaCo Study Group, Hospital Auxiliary, PEO, American Legion Auxiliary, Book and Thimble, Chicken Little, TOPS 893, St John Lutheran groups, First Baptist WEMS, Rainbow, Embroidery club, Westfield Congregational Ladies Aid, Harmony circle, Adaville United Methodist Women, and ACT annual meeting at Akron Golf Clubhouse. The Akron Public Library announces new adult books including These are new books in the adult section. Highlights include They Rose Above It by Bob Considine about acts of heroism, Weather Wisdom by Albert Lee on weather folklore, A Death in Canaan by Joan Barthel a murder case in New England, and To The Opera Ball by Sarah Gainsham about a wartime love story.
Mr and Mrs Henry Collmann, long residents of Chatsworth and now Plymouth Manor in Le Mars, invite friends from Akron and Chatsworth to visit. Mrs Collmann served as Chatsworth correspondent for the Akron Register Tribune for many years.
This week’s selections include a hearty bean casserole using canned beans and a sauce of sugar mustard and catsup, plus a Cheeseburger Casserole with a biscuit topping. Both bake in 350 to 425 degree ovens, with variations for crock pots and potential substitutions.
Immanuel and Union Creek Lutheran churches held annual meetings with a theme Evangelical Outreach. Budgets for 1977 were approved. Immanuel elected Rosella Anderson Dellis Dimmick Ronald Dreeszen and Mary Ellen Powell to three year council terms and installed them. ushers and funeral ushers were named along with auditors and treasurer Curtis Lewison Jr. Union Creek named new council members Meri Fickbohm Eleanor Harvey Jerry Johnson Alma Seely and appointed farm board and cemetery board members. Organists, superintendents, ushers, committees and auditors were listed with several names and positions throughout the two churches.
Mrs. R J Baker returned home after visiting Brookings South Dakota where she attended Ann Marie’s installation as Queen of Jobs Daughters on January 2. She also witnessed Rev Fisher ordained at St Pauls Episcopal on January 6 and joined PEO Founders Day luncheon January 19. Also noted are visits by Vernice Blum of Bronson and Jerome Blum of Moville, a 40th wedding anniversary for Alfred and Arlene Hartman observed January 6 with relatives from Sioux City Merrill Boone Le Mars Craig Akron Hawarden and other towns.
Dedication and recital services were held January 2 at Trinity Lutheran church Hawarden for a newly installed Allen organ Miss Laurie Hill University of Iowa organ major performed The Hill family roots trace to Akron Iowa and Marie Degen of Akron Also mentioned AMSA officer Thomas Searls on leave in Akron and his upcoming FRAMP training in San Diego plus Akron relatives and Sioux City birthday gathering for an 86th birthday
The Loyal Neighbors club shifts its meeting to 2 p.m. February 8 at Mrs. Keith Swanson’s home. Previously set for February 1, members are asked to note the new date. Tryouts for the ACT production Dracula occur January 27, 28, and 30 at Ye Olde Opera House in Akron.
A son born January 21 1977 to Mr and Mrs Glen Klemme of Akron at Vermillion hospital Vermillion South Dakota. Deacon James weighs 10 pounds and measures 23 inches. Sister Jody 2% shares in the welcome. Grandparents Mrs Helen Johnson and Mr and Mrs Leverne Klemme of Akron. Great grandmothers Mrs Anna Kiemme Spink SD and Mrs Katherine Oelrichs Le Mars. Mrs Klemme is the former Donna Johnson.
Mr and Mrs Dwight Dirks and Jolene Huls were married on Saturday January 8 1977 at Trinity Lutheran in Akron. Ceremony included readings by Rev Durwood Clauson with organist Mrs Wanda Onnen and singers The Wedding Song. The couple reside in Martin's Trailer Court Sioux City.
The Akron Senior Citizens Club met Monday January 17 at 1 30 p m with 46 members present. Robert Brown and Mrs Carol Harris provided music and songs for the group. The program was enjoyed and attendees planned future visits. The afternoon continued with cards and bingo. Grace Small secretary.
Members of the Home Culture club gathered Tuesday January 24 at the home of Alice Willer. Gladys Huebner led a review of the book If You Could See What I Hear by Tom Sullivan.
Two showings of Corrie at Akron High School theater Sunday afternoon and evening February 6 at 2 30 and 7 30 p m. Admission is free but offerings will be taken for the producers. Corrie Ten Boom fans will be delighted by this behind the scenes film.
Social calls and family visits fill a week at the Akron nursing home with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Postlewait visiting Minnie Postlewait, Frank Douglas turning 89 on January 18, and many others delivering greetings, cookies, and acts of kinship across Akron Westfield Merrill Le Mars Hawarden Remsen and surrounding areas.
