The Iowa Farm Bureau funds scholarships for Akron high school seniors pursuing further education. Each award is 160 dollars annually for two years. Application forms are in the Akron high school guidance office with a February 20, 1977 deadline. Requirements include a photo, transcript, 3 to 5 letters of recommendation, and signature of the county Farm Bureau women's chair. Eligibility is limited to those entering professions needing at least two years of college and from Farm Bureau member families.
The South Dakota branch of the Committee Combat of Huntington's Disease will hold its general meeting Feb. 5 at 1 30 p.m. in the Sioux Valley educational unit Sioux Falls. Dr Bill Arbes USD school of medicine psychiatrist will be guest speaker. The meeting will be informal with a question and answer session. For more information call Mrs Robert Vreugdenhil 565 3068.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wieboldt of Athans Georgia announce the birth of their first child, John Ray, born January 6, 1977. Grandparents are Donald and Lucken of rural Akron, with great grandparents Ruth Robertson and J Henry Lucken.
John C. Dalton of Reno spent Saturday with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Dalton. Mrs. Courtney Mowery traveled to Phoenix to visit her daughter Dorothy and meet a new great grandchild. Mrs. Ruth Larsen and Cyril Larsen with Chris drove to Spirit Lake for a christening of Larsen’s great granddaughter. Charles Wetzeler’s family welcomed grandparents. Oma Gassman returned Saturday from Los Angeles after six weeks with her son Clark. On the way back she visited her brother Bartley Ogden and wife in Mesa, Arizona.
Wendi Johnson of Akron was among 1,325 South Dakota State University undergraduates honored for academic excellence in the fall 1976 semester. Dean's list honors went to students with a 3.25 GPA or higher of a possible 4.0.
Mr and Mrs Cy Larsen of Akron as agents for New York Life Insurance attended the Sioux City general office annual meeting. The office reported its best year ever with a 28.8 percent rise in annual premiums and total volume sold of over 101 million dollars in 1976.
Morningside College dean Dr George T Prigmore announced the first semester 1976 77 dean's honor roll with Jill Tindall of rural Akron earning a perfect 4 0 and Timm Banks of Westfield named among the upper ten percent. The college in Sioux City enrolls 1255 undergraduates and offers graduate programs in education and special education along with an active evening school.
Fall semester grade reports from Augustana College in Sioux Falls show 133 of 1,928 full time students earned perfect straight A averages and 664 students, more than one third, qualified for the dean's honor list. Akron students Jéan Vreugdenhil and Lisa Taylor were among those honored.
The Akron hospital auxiliary met at 7:30 p.m. on Monday Jan. 31. Minutes were read and approved. Ten dollars was sent to the Borchers family, New Year's baby parents. A progressive coffee or tea fundraiser was set for Feb. 13 to March 12. Gerald Dykstra spoke on hospital and nursing home matters. Zelda Wright supervised publicity.
The high school equivalency adult education class will resume on Feb 7 at Akron high school. Western Iowa Tech sponsors the GED program for adults seeking a high school diploma. Plymouth county Farm Bureau members recently attended the American Farm Bureau convention in Hawaii. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Harley Hiemstra of Kingsley Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kluver of Remsen Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Siebens of Akron and Mrs. Harlan Rowe of Le Mars. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Easton of Westfield also attended and then joined the South Pacific tour.
Akon nursing home residents host a stream of visitors from Akron Westfield Le Mars Hawarden and Elk Point including families friends and relatives. Piano music and hymns were shared at chapel services and multiple households stopped by for coffee and sandwiches.
Julie Banks of Akron is among 40 Yankton College students named to the first semester honor list as registrar Mrs. Bernette Vollmer notes. 98 students are on the dean's list, including 22 with perfect 4.0 averages.
Cynthia Appley Hayes announces casting for the upcoming Dracula play directed with her husband Jim. The first weekend of March, March 4 5 and 6, features Harold Baker Mildred Baker Jim Henrichsen Keith Knapp Francis Blum Tim Kelley Curt Lewison Debbie Lewison and others in the ACT production.
