The Rural Home Culture Club met at Ramona Weenink’s home for the annual Christmas luncheon with co hostesses Mary Anderson and Miriam Hemmingsen. Fourteen members answered roll call with Christmas time savers. Ramona read the Christmas story from Matthew and a state president’s letter on the Energy Crisis was read. Members shared stories of a special Christmas and exchanged homemade gifts, while each brought a gift for Cherokee mental health patients.

Mrs. Olive M Sanford 98 of Westfield former Westfield postmistress died January 7 after a seven month illness at her home. Services were January 9 at Schroeder Funeral Home Akron with Rev Ralph Burdette officiating burial Riverside Cemetery Akron. Born May 27 1875 West Union she married February 26 1896 at West Union. They lived in eastern Iowa and Colorado before farming in Iowa and Minnesota. She was postmistress at Westfield for 20 years before retirement. Survivors include a son Sidney Richmond Calif a granddaughter and three great grandsons.

Mayor Fred Kies Dies After Illness in Sioux Falls
Fred D Kies born December 1 1898 in Neillsville Wisconsin son of David and Delia Kies. He lived in Hurley later married Millie Rundell on May 1 1923 and farmed in Reliance South Dakota before trucking then road contracting in Hurley. He died December 28 after hospitalization in Sioux Falls aged 75 27. Survivors include wife Millie two daughters Lorine Carl son and Jean Carlson plus siblings and five grandchildren. He served as mayor of Hurley and was a United Methodist Church member.
