Bertha Marple a longtime Akron resident is named senior citizen of the month for January. Born January 18 1884 in Union County to Hendrick and Mrs Johnson she was the youngest of four. She married J R Marple in 1910 and the couple raised three children before moving to Akron in 1948. Now 90 she remains active in Brule Creek Lutheran church and Rachal circle, enjoys cooking and entertaining, and has four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

CROP committee raises about 1200 dollars year’s drive
The Akron CROP Committee sent nearly 1200 to state offices. Jerry Johnson led as Akron Community Chairman with youth from Adaville United Methodist First Baptist Immanuel Lutheran Plymouth Presbyterian St John Lutheran Trinity Lutheran and Union Creek Lutheran helping. The drive ran Saturday November 3 across Sioux Valley Township and parts of Iowa townships. The message recalls Jesus’ words of feeding the hungry and thanks all who assisted.

Nelson Hatchery poultry house destroyed by fire
A metal poultry building 32 by 140 feet at Nelson Hatchery farm two miles south of Akron burned Friday around 1:00 p.m. Firefighters, Vern Vander Helm reported loss of a small Ford tractor, a pressure sprayer, and a proportioner not insured. No chickens were in the building, which contained 7,600 ten day old chicks ready for move in this week. The building loss was insured. cause is undetermined. The Vander Helms plan a new building and seek a home for the chicks.

Sled accident injures Shaun Foley in rural Akron
Shaun Foley nine son of Mr and Mrs Gordon Foley of Akron rural area was injured Saturday while sledding on their farm. He collided with a woven wire fence sustaining a broken nose a severe cut to his upper lip loose front teeth and a torn tongue. He was admitted to Akron Hospital then transferred to St Josephs Hospital Sioux City. Admissions included Kervyn Heeren Walford Forslund and Donald Wiberg all of Akron. Dismissals were Kervyn Heeren and Walford Forslund of Akron.
