Westfield Write ups Celebrate 80th Birthday in Local Visit

Westfield News notes a Sioux City visit by Mr and Mrs Robert Jordan and family along with relatives from Sioux City Jefferson and Elk Point. James Tracy was honored last Sunday for his 80th birthday. Edward Kehrberg County Assessor will hold 1966 personal property assessments at City Hall on Tuesday February 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Bring 1966 Homestead and Military Exemption forms and current Rabies Vaccination certificate for dogs. All town residents urged to attend.

Abil ity Counts writing contest opens for Iowa juniors

The 18th annual national Abil ity Counts contest is open to all Iowa 11th and 12th graders. P J O'Brien, chair of the Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, urged schools to enter and said the theme What Handicapped Workers Are Contributing to My Community aims to deepen student understanding of employment challenges for the disabled. Entries must be postmarked by February 16 and sent to Miss Fran Haibeisen. Prizes include Series E War Bonds for the top three, with first place also earning an expense paid trip to Washington D C in April 1966 hosted by the Iowa Federation of Labor. The state winner advances to the national contest and the national winners will be chosen.

Friends celebrate a 25th wedding anniversary at a home with Helen Irene Cobb and Vinton G Adams. They plan to live on the Cobb farm west of town. Lee Parker and Ethel Neal of Akron wed January 31 1916 at Elk Point D. They’ll reside on a farm east of town. The L F Taylor family notes illness. Snow measured several inches in early February totaling about a foot with cold temperatures and measles reported in the area.

Prize corn contest yields first and second prizes

About seventy five ears of corn entered in the Register-Tribune prize corn contest with A W Johnson J B Smith and E A Fields judging. William Sayles southwest of town wins first prize for largest ear and Ingebret Halvorsen northwest of town takes second. Al Frazer enters longest ear at 13% inches. Louis N Crill of Elk Point secures five year lease for double store rooms in the new opera house building to be occupied by Union County Investment Co general store. An evening rain turns to six inch snowfall delaying rural mail. Des Moines based American Life Insurance Co vice presidents Hanes and Barringer attend Akron opera house opening built with premiums paid there. About eighty county farmers meet in LeMars to form a farmers elevator in that city W R Null and James Hughes named president and secretary. Married Anna daughter of Mrs A Frederickson and Frank son of Mrs A Eden Feb 11 1906 at German Lutheran church with Rev Fred Meske officiating. They will reside on J C Mellen farm northwest of town. Attorney I S Struble LeMars slugged by farm tenant near Westfield Wm Cassman over rent dispute. Cassman jailed for three days after refusing to pay a $10 fine in Mayor Doyle's court. If you are over 40 and healthy it is okay to shovel snow says Iowa Heart Association urging not to overwork.

Local Iowa men begin Navy basic training at San Diego

Navy Seaman Recruits Gerald Clifford Groon Jr Dennis Norman Johnson and Bruce A Knapp, all of Iowa towns, start seven weeks of basic training at the Naval Training Center San Diego under veteran petty officers. They study naval history, organization, customs, ordnance, gunnery, seamanship, damage control, first aid, swimming and shipboard drills. Upon completion, assignments depend on Navy classifications, personal choice, and Navy needs.
