Westfield Board Meets In February 1966 Session

Westfield Community School Board of Education held a regular meeting February 1966 at 7 30 PM with all members present. Minutes and bills approved. Old business covered furnace ignition system and bus loading distance to meet state requirements. Board approved applying for 1000 from NEA for equipment and for new office practice books. Starting date for 1966 67 postponed. Resignations of superintendent Janssen and principal Wayne Austin accepted. Austin named coach for Senior Class Play. TV program discussed with Vermilion meat and cookery school event scheduled March 2 at LeMars Royal Theatre with free admission. Sandra Sime to demonstrate for National Livestock and Meat Board. Westfield Homemaker of Tomorrow 1966 is Sharen Brundeen. State winner to receive 1500 college scholarship. school to receive Britannica set. Second place earns 500 grant. Family hosted church event. Lent masses scheduled. Congregational Ladies Aid meeting March 8 with hostesses and devotional leader listed.

Veterans reminded less than three months remain to apply for the newly reopened National Service Life Insurance. The Government of India and the U S Peace Corps seek 200 Iowans to teach agricultural methods to Indian farmers amid a looming grain shortage. On Friday February 11 AHS students were excused at 9 00 am for an assembly. Congressman Stanley Greigg spoke on Medicare the Vietnam crisis and other government actions. Students asked questions and the visit proved educational and interesting.

Peace Corps recruitment drives in Iowa kick off February

Iowa Governor Harold Hughes proclaims February as Peace Corps Month in Iowa. The effort, led by the Iowa State Manpower Development Council with Extension Service and Vocational Agriculture support, runs through February and to March 15. Training for volunteers starts mid June with Peace Corps offering language and other skill training as needed.

Iowa Conservation Commission announced 1966 fishing rules effective March 1, 1966 to February 28, 1967. Perch daily limits rise to 25 with 60 possession. smallmouth bass open year round with same limits as last year. Walleye sauger and northern pike seasons set April 30, 1966 to February 15, 1967 with continuous open season in streams and oxbow lakes. Walleye plus sauger daily limit five, possession ten. northern pike daily limit three, possession six.

Frigid Week Delays Roads Rail as Couples Remember Past

Wind and snow sweep through the third week of February causing blocked highways and rail lines. Akron’s first married couple A G A Palm marked their 64th wedding anniversary on February 18 1936 at their daughter’s home in Sioux City. Mrs Arthur Lamoureux 60 died February 20 1985 at her son in law and daughter James Redmond home from a heart attack. Her husband and eleven children survive. Funeral services at St Patricks Catholic church and burial at Salix Iowa their former home H V Jordan 82 died February 14 1936. Surviving were his wife Emma two sons two daughters five grandchildren nine great grandchildren and one sister. Funeral services at Swanson funeral home and burial. Birth announcements include a daughter to Jay Billings February 14 1986 a son to Hayes Barr February 15 1936 and a daughter to John Tammen February 20 1936. F J Boden opened a Sweet Shop and Luncheonette in the former Corner Cafe building.

Akron fire department held its third annual ball as a local basketball team left for a several days tour of surrounding towns. Ice harvest from the Big Sioux river is nearly done. Percy McCorkell family moves back from Green Valley Minnesota to farm. David Guillaume family moves back to Elk Point. Gurd VonHage goes to Chicago to work for International Harvester Co. Clint Strong and son Lyle go to Omaha for eye specialist consult.

Weather, marriages, and local notices from 1916

Moderate weather followed a cold spell as O E McKeltips and Edith BE Eaton wed January 12 1916 in Everatt Washington and plan to reside in Monroe Washington where Carl McKeltips works as depot agent. Dr J H Kerr leased Mrs M A Muhs residence as a hospital and the Kendall Hotel reopened after fire damage. A birth is noted for 1916 to Mr and Mrs C A Swanson February 4. A Sioux City Journal item recalls shipments of hubber to Portlandville for a lumber yard and the Majestic Theatre showed The Siam Princess with Ruth Stonehouse and Frank Bushman.

Million Mothers Protest March for March of Dimes

A million American mothers plan a January protest march to back the 1966 March of Dimes drive against birth defects. Actress Jane Wyatt chairs the effort with leaflets “Happy Birth Day” explaining actions for engaged couples and families with defective births. The program funds Birth Defects Centers, research, professional education, and public outreach to reduce preventable birth defects, which kill and disable many children annually.
