Packers Feeding Livestock Expected to Rise in Coming Years
Iowa State extension economist Gene Futrell reports 1,052,000 cattle and 74,800 calves fed by packers and retailers in 1964, about 3.4 percent of slaughter and 6.5 percent of marketings, with 182 firms involved. He says contracting with feeders will drive growth, private feeders retaining major market share, and total beef demand likely to rise over 10 to 15 years. Feeding varies by state, higher in the South and West, with sheep and hog feeding much smaller in 1964.
