Due to early publication this week there are no comments. The Akron Register-Tribune staff extends New Years greetings to all our readers and continued service in the new year.
Mrs Henry Collmann hosts visitors from Le Mars and Hawarden amid a busy week of calling, dining, and genealogical visits. The Reed family itinerary includes Carl Hitzemann, Wes Crow, and J J Steckelberg households with trips to Akron Elk Point Cherokee and Hawarden showing Thanksgiving and Christmas preparations mirrored in neighborly gatherings.
The Plymouth County Iowa State University Alumni Association will host an orientation and information meeting for prospective ISU students on Monday December 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the basement meeting room of First National Bank Le Mars. Six Plymouth County students currently at ISU will share topics including living quarters course work campus activities and scholarships and loans.
Scott Baker of Des Plaines arrived Friday December 20 to spend the holidays with his mother Mildred E. Baker. Jeff Baker of Ida Grove will also visit his mother for the holidays. Sunday guests at the Terry Miller home included Clarence Miller Ethel C. Harris the Millers Cindy and Patty and Terry Singer. Jim Davis and Gaynor Klemme from St Louis arrived with Leonard Klemme of Akron to spend Christmas with their families.
Ted C. Cummins died December 17 in Colorado Springs after a brief illness. Born November 3, 1905 in Louisville Kentucky, he grew up in Akron as an athlete starring in football baseball and basketball. He pitched for the Riverton Wyoming team before living in Las Vegas and Colorado Springs since 1962. He married Lela Krauss in the late 1920s. they recently celebrated their 44th anniversary. Surviving are his wife a daughter Jacquelin Dow of San Diego two sisters Mrs Andrew Siebens of Le Mars and Mrs W W Hodge of Massillon and a brother J O Cummins of Davenport Iowa. Funeral services were held at Schroeder Funeral Chapel with Rev Tom Balm officiating. Soloist Gary Tucker sang I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked and Crossing The Bar. Piano was by Pam Borchers. Casket bearers were R D Clark Gerald F Smith Loray Lamoureux Arthur Voss Robert Voss and H P Anderson. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.
Gary DeHaan has been named an agent for Farmers Elevator Mutual Insurance Company FEMIC and Farmland Life Insurance Company He will service towns in Plymouth and Cherokee counties FEMIC based in Des Moines offers auto fire farm liability homeowners hospitalization and income protection DeHaan studied at Gale Institute Minneapolis and will reside with his wife Donna Jane and three children in Orange City Iowa
Ten Iowa Farm Bureau women were chosen Monday as delegates to the American Farm Bureau women's annual meeting in New Orleans January 6 to 8. The group includes three county women’s chairmen and seven state women's committee members. Also noted are safety tips from the Red Cross about preventing house fires during the holidays.
Mr and Mrs Cyril Larsen announce the marriage of their daughter Julie to Greg Breitbarth on December 14 at St John Church Preston township with only immediate family. Lt and Mrs Alan Borchers attended as witnesses. Reception at Ruth Larsen’s home. Couple resides on a farm near Akron after a wedding trip.
Scott Baker received his masters degree in business administration on December 13 at the University of Chicago. He is the son of Mildred E. Baker of Akron and a 1965 Akron Community High School graduate. Baker earned a BA in mathematics from Iowa State University in 1969 and works as an assistant analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago.
Aria Rae Tapper of Akron joins 291 peers on the Iowa Lakes Community College dean's list for fall quarter with a 4.0 GPA. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Tapper, she earns honor recognition. A winter reading program party for signups will be held January 2 at 2 p.m. in the Library Conference Room. The adult section adds portraits and titles by Engle, Morgan, Goudge, Herriot, Ballard, Kazan, Bob Hope, Behme, Leahy and others.
Pictured are Mr and Mrs Osamu Tamaki in traditional Japanese wedding garb. Osamu studied English in America last year and was a guest during the fall of 1973 at the home of Deb and Gene Knudsen in Akron. The former bachelor was married recently and sent this photo, noted by Akron Community Schools students for his quiet humor and interest in the American education system.
Michaelene Gabel and Dennis Lyle Minor wed in an afternoon double ring ceremony at St John’s Lutheran church in Preston township rural Akron officiated by Rev Janes Sandvik. Attendants included Claudia Lewison as matron of honor and Geraldine Gabel as personal attendant with several Gabel and Minor family members as ushers candle lighters and honor staff. A reception followed in the church basement. The couple will reside northeast of Akron.
Iowa colleges and universities report a total of 109 521 students this fall. The three public universities Iowa State Northern Iowa and the third university account for about 45 percent of all Iowa students. Private colleges hold nearly 29 percent and area community colleges just over 20 percent. The 1974 total rises 22.1 percent from last year.
Grassroot opinion from Paris Tenn Post-Intelligencer notes a deadly freeway incident in Los Angeles where a distressed youth leaped from an overpass after being struck by multiple speeding autos. Only one driver stopped, prompting concern that traffic intensifies today leaving little humane response.
Harold Sears announces two new SCORE members, Joe Kutcher of Sioux City and Ray Kolhoff of South Sioux City, joining the Sioux City chapter to provide free advisory counseling to local small businesses. SCORE offers retired executives to assist with operating problems, with offices at the Elks Lodge in Sioux City and weekday hours 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The chapter holds monthly meetings on the fourth Wednesday at the Elks Lodge.
Nursing home residents enjoyed organ and piano music by Gail Hemmingsen Marie Degen and other entertainers. Visitors included Mrs Earl Merrigan grandson from Burbank SD and Lizzie Haage from Brunsville. Junior Choir sang Christmas carols. Goodie baskets were distributed by several churches. Snow is falling this morning and the week is shortened by holidays.
