Angered residents report culprits removing outdoor Christmas bulbs and decorations in Akron. Community voices urge action, urging letters to Iowa officials and local representatives, and stressing the season’s spirit of peace. Mrs. Henry Collmann and several correspondents attended a Hawarden pot luck supper. Visitors and callers dropped by homes of Burnight, McKee, Moller, Lake, and DeRaad from Sioux City, Boone, Hudson, and Akron during the week. A funeral in Akron involved George Moehlmann and Edith Packard. Santa Claus ends with a quip about stock.
Mrs. Dan Blake Sr. 81 of Akron died December 11 1974 at Akron hospital after brief illness. Services were 1:30 p.m. December 14 at First Church of Christ. Interment Riverside cemetery. Survivors include four daughters and two sons with 20 grandchildren 36 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.
Myron Floren of the Lawrence Welk Show will headline opening night at Le Mars Iowa on Sunday August 3. Grandpa Jones of Hee Haw will perform on Tuesday August 5. The fair board confirms a one time gate charge with free grandstand shows.
Airman Peggy S. Peterson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry D Peterson of Alcester South Dakota, has been assigned to Sheppard AFB Texas after completing basic training at Lackland AFB Texas. She studied the Air Force mission and human relations and will pursue wire maintenance training at the Technical Training Center. A 1972 Alcester High School graduate.
In observance of 50 years of marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Young, Mr. and Mrs. Clair McCorkell, and Mr. and Mrs. Truman Campbell respoke their wedding vows at the First Baptist Church in Akron during morning worship on December 8. A testimonial program followed in church parlors that afternoon.
Sioux Viking Lodge 494 Sons of Norway will hold a Christmas party and pot-luck supper at 1. CF hall, 1224 18th St, Sioux City, on Saturday, December 21 at 6 30 p.m. Young children of members are asked to attend to welcome Santa Claus.
The Senior Citizens Club met at the Legion hall on December 16 at noon for a pot-luck lunch. Fifty seven members and two guests attended the program led by Gail Hemmingsen on the organ and Marie Degen on the piano. Coffee and cake followed. all enjoyed the event.
Election of officers for Vesper Chapter No. 61 of Eastern Star was held December 9 with Mrs. Gaynor Harris elected worthy matron. Installation practice set for Monday December 30 and installation of officers on Friday January 3, 1975.
Jill Tindall stars in the Christmas presentation Amahl and the Night Visitors by Gian Carlo Menotti in Le Mars December 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. in the junior high auditorium. The opera, aimed at children, tells of Amahl a crippled boy and his mother in a visit from the Three Kings. Reservations are available by calling Frances Moeller or Frances DePree.
Akron residents attended Farmland Industries annual meeting in Kansas City December 11 to 13. Nearly 50 million dollars in cash refunds were apportioned to member associations based on patronage for the year ending August 31. Farmland serves more than 2,100 local cooperatives in 15 states and reported an 81.2 billion dollar volume, with plans to finance facility expansion to meet member needs in fertilizer, petroleum, and feed. Attendees from Akron included Dwight Nylund, Leonard Swanson, Max Vreugdenhil, Steve McHale, Dennis Beech, and Lloyd Myers.
Sunday and weekend visits filled with relatives from Sioux City Omaha Denver and Washington state as Mr and Mrs Elmer Fickbohm entertained guests including Truman Campbell Walter Young Clair McCorkell and Rev R Ritzhaupt. Attending pre Christmas gatherings were Violet McInnis Roy Cummings Sherwood Smith and families with extended trips to Hawarden Akron and Port Angeles.
Westmar College hosts an art exhibit by the German Club titled Christmas in Germany in Upper Weidler Hall. The display runs daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. through December 20 and features a tannenbaum Advent wreath and German dolls from faculty and students connected to German culture.
The Union County Pork Ettes sponsor a Pork Queen contest at 2 p.m. December 28 in the Lincoln Union REA meeting room. Eligible entrants are young ladies aged 19 to 21. The winner receives a $50 savings bond, attends the 1975 State Contest as an observer, and represents Union County in the 1976 State Contest. Applications from the Union County Extension office Elk Point or Mrs Ronald Johnson Alcester. Entries due December 26.
Residents and visitors filled a nursing home with holiday cheer as a Christmas tree lit the southeast lobby corner. Elsie Anderson’s Washington state daughter sent holly while Elsa Strobel and Mrs Roy Postle visited. Local clergy led carols sung by church groups and a junior choir. Relatives from Westfield Akron Sioux City and Norfolk joined birthday celebrations for Gertrude Ross as crafts for doors were made, ending with a warm Merry Christmas.
