Westfield-Akron C YC thanks all who attended the Hootenanny saying it was a success. The Westfield Community School Committee will meet Thursday August 20 at 8:00 p.m. in the Public Library. The Ada ville youth group will join Pilgrim Fellowship for an outdoor campfire meeting at Jim Mansfield’s farm Sunday August 23 at 8:00 p.m. Sue Mansfield and Bill Michael to lead discussions.

Rise in approved school bonds across United States
The U S Office of Education reports 71 percent of 2 6 billion dollars in school bond issues approved in 1964 across more than 2 000 elections. This compares with 69 9 percent in 1963 and 70 1 percent in 1962 with total obligations of 1 83 and 1 87 billion respectively. Estimated bond sales reached about 2 57 billion in 1964, while average interest rates rose to about 3 25 percent from 3 11 percent in 1963.

Rain Dampens Community Show Then Akron Beats Yankton 11 to 4
Twenty years ago a forenoon rain dampened the 4 H Livestock and Farm Products Show but cleared to a successful event. Akron defeated Yankton 11 4 in a late afternoon baseball game with two servicemen on leave, Pvt Lefty Swift and Lt Robert Tucker, appearing for a couple innings. Also noted were a county supervisor appointment for Fred Claesson Sr, a lightning strike at Harold Bringman farm, and obituaries for Mrs A L Seamands. Drowning tragedy near Floyd Green farm claims Ralph Stinehart
The 18 year old Ralph Stinehart drowned after stepping into a deep hole while bathing with friends in the Big Sioux river a few miles north of town near the Floyd Green farm. Survived by his parents two sisters Rhoda Mae and Shirley Jean and a brother Lauren. Funeral at Union Creek Lutheran church and burial in Nora South Dakota cemetery. Also notes Akron loss to Westfield 11 to 2 in S and D league game and county tournament results Remsen over Akron 6 to 3. Hamburgers win first half Softball title. August 10 1984 obituary by Ed Patterson. August Meske 25th wedding anniversary celebrated August 12 1934. An August heat spell broken by 1.57 inch rainfall aiding late crops.

Born a daughter to Dan and spouse August 20 1924. Gus Metz 48 Sioux City died August 17 1924, at brother Adolph Metz home after nine weeks care. Funeral and burial in Floyd, Sioux City. Akron baseball team lost 4 0 to Beresford and 12 0 to Canton. Ted Cummins pitched a one hitter at Beresford but costly errors.

Fifty years back a special August 21, 1914 election approved issuing 10000 dollars in bonds to build equip and operate an Akron electric light and power plant amid a large crowd at Farmers picnic near Jag Rossgrove. Public Picnic Draws Crowd For Parochial School Fund
Sixty year ago on August 15 a public picnic benefited the new Catholic parochial school with 2 good attendance. A colored troupe performed music in the afternoon and evening. A baseball game was played despite the Hawarden team’s no show, a 26 to 4 contest between two local nines. Bert Smith plans to teach in Medical Lake after moving to join his father and relatives. Two Paulist Fathers from the east conducted a mission at St Patrick’s Church. Franklin Rust hospitalized in Sioux City for severe blood poisoning in his foot. The railroad yards at Akron were brick paved. F L Rice announced a new Akron enterprise stocking buggies and wagons from Parry Manufacturing and representing Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co. Chas A Seamands seeks Republican county auditor in Union County S D. Henning Gassman seeks register of deeds. Died Mrs Jonathan D Moore aged 75 August 17 1904 at daughter Mrs J C Mellen’s home. Elmer O Rielly aged 25 died August 14 1904 from a head injury suffered in a ball game two weeks earlier. survived by parents and two sisters Freddie and Grace. funeral at St Patrick’s Church with burial in Catholic Cemetery.

Emil Schutte Honored as August Cooperator of the Month
Emil Schutte a Soil Conservation District Cooperator in Grant township was named Cooperator of the Month for August by Commissioners Tom Kenny Don Litzmann and Don Lucken. He began soil conservation work in 1952 on his rolling Grant farm with 60 acres contouring and later expanded to terracing and basin plans with his son Dale.

Less Corn Reported Under Loan and Fewer Deliveries
U S farmers reported a smaller volume of corn placed under loan for the 1963 crop and fewer deliveries to the Commodity Credit Corporation after July. Through June 1964 about 395 million bushels were under support, well below 1962's level, with loan repayments exceeding 86 million bushels. Plymouth County reported 1,009,060 bushels under price support loans and purchase agreements through July, with 353,000 bushels repaid by then.
