Westfield Celebration Day Volunteers and Winners Highlight

Westfield held a busy Old Settlers Celebration with carnival rides cake walk dunk tank and numerous stands. Don Dunham and Andy Johnson won horseshoe classes while Ed McCorkell of Akron took a console television prize. The event featured Midwest Promenaders and Diskate Drifters, with many volunteers thanked and plans announced for parish picnics and upcoming gatherings.

1964 Wheat and Feed Grain Payments Made in Plymouth County

Cecil J. Kennedy, Plymouth County ASC chair, reports 1964 feed grain and wheat program payments issued through August 3 totaling 1,184,042.27 dollars for diverted acreages. Advance receipts aided production costs. wheat gains include diversion payments and 70 and 26 cent per bushel certificate values for domestic and export use, with restrictions lasting through 1964 and grazing allowed after October 1.

Cooperative Study In Reading In Iowa Schools

State and local education officials join with the U S Office of Education and over 25 000 first graders to test four reading methods in an 18 month study starting 1964 65. Hale C Reid leads the effort with cooperation from 20 universities and seven state departments of education and the State University of Iowa. Results due early 1966.

Five years ago Mrs. Paul Holmes of Newport Beach California was treated for cancer and is now cured. The message urges annual health checkups and supports cancer research with a donation to a local ACS unit.

ISU Fire Prevention Demonstration At Fair

The Iowa State Department of Health will showcase a fire prevention demonstration at the Varied Industries Building during the Iowa State Fair. Free health literature and birth certificate application forms will be available, with broader health agency displays in the Educational Building. The fair runs August 21 to 30, and Crystal Hennings of Ricketts shares a 90-doll collection hobby.

Interstate System and Federal-aid highway program growth

In 1964 Congress aimed for a gradual expansion of the regular Federal-aid highway program alongside finishing the Interstate System. A billion-dollar annual apportionment triggers a 2 billion upgrade plan, with 2.8 billion for the Interstate program, totaling about 8.1 billion for Interstate and over 5 billion for the overall Federal-aid funds. Gelatin Shrimp Mold For Salad Service

Sprinkle gelatin over 2 cups cold tomato juice to soften. Heat remaining tomato juice to near boiling, add softened gelatin sugar and Lea and Perrins. Stir until dissolved. Chill until slightly thickened. Drain shrimp rinse cold and drain again. Fold into gelatin mixture. Turn into molds chill until set. Unmold on salad greens garnish with cucumber and serve with mayonnaise. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Fourteen members answered roll call to the piece A Simple Center Piece and a peach canning demonstration by Verna French and Tiffery Port er was judged by Mrs. Williams.
